Columbia men's tennis earns first top-10 win of the season over No. 9 Baylor on Sunday.
CHICAGO — The No. 12-ranked and No. 14-seeded Columbia men's tennis team registered its first top-10 win of the season Sunday, rallying past No. 9 Baylor, 4-1, at the Midtown Athletic Club in downtown Chicago to wrap up action at the ITA National Indoor Team Championship.
"Great showing by our boys," said Columbia head coach Bid Goswami. "Two good wins over Notre Dame and Baylor, who beat No. 3 Mississippi State yesterday. It is a shame we could not pull off the upset over Wake Forest on Friday, but these two good wins and the close match against Wake Forest confirm my belief of this team. The boys believe it too now, and hope we keep getting better with hard work these next few months."
It was the third time in the last calendar year in which the two teams have faced off, as well as the third time in four seasons in which the two teams have met in the indoor championship, with the two splitting the series 2-2 in that span. The Lions now own a 4-2 lead in the overall series history.
Making it look easy, Columbia (5-1) cruised through doubles with a pair of wins on courts one and three. Columbia's duo of Victor Pham and Rian Pandole earned a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles to get half the way there, and Jack Lin and Jackie Tang finished the job with a 6-0 victory on the top court.
Lin continued his strong singles performance from Saturday, earning another ranked win over No. 29 Johannes Schretter in straight sets. No. 54 Pham continued the hot streak for the Lions with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles.
Baylor (9-3) got on the board as Tang fell 6-4, 6-1 on the No. 4 singles court.
After winning a first-set tiebreak, Pandole was able to clinch the match for the Lions, taking down Jimmy Bendeck, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
Columbia will return to action Feb. 24, returning home to the Dick Savitt Tennis Center to face Big Ten foe Northwestern at 1 p.m. ET. The contest will be the first in a three-match homestand before the Lions travel to Texas to face a trio of opponents.
