Canby’s Shutout, Grzybek’s Homers Power Columbia by FIU, 3-0

Lions outscore opponents 22-15 on opening weekend

MIAMI Madison Canby tossed her second career complete-game shutout and Sommer Grzybek provided all the offense with her third and fourth home runs of the weekend as Columbia softball blanked tournament host Florida International, 3-0, early Sunday at Felsberg Field.

Columbia finished its season-opening tournament with a record of 2-3 but suffered all three of those losses by just a single run. The Lions outscored their opponents 22-15 with six combined home runs while the pitching staff posted a 2.70 ERA.

"We grew so much from Friday to Sunday and I could not be more encouraged," Columbia head coach Jennifer Teague said. "I thought we were locked in today and I was happy to see us get out of here with a win after losing three games by one run. We're in a good place right now and I can't wait to head to ECU to see what we've got next weekend."

Canby (1-1) limited FIU (9-5) to just five hits while striking out two and surrendering zero walks on 98 pitches. The sophomore retired eight straight through the first three innings and mowed down 12 of the first 14 batters she faced. The complete game was her third of the weekend, which she finished with a 2.03 ERA.

"It was just a tremendous weekend for Maddie," Teague added. "I'm so proud of the way she battled and trusted her defense. FIU is a very good hitting team and she pitched like an upperclassman."

Grzybek powered the Lions ahead with a two-run shot in the first before adding an insurance blast in the fourth. The junior hit .467 while slugging 1.267 through the tournament, driving in five runs on her four homers.

"What else can you say except it was just a monster weekend for Sommer," Teague went on to say. "Four home runs in a weekend is ridiculous. Our three, four and five hitters pack a good punch and having Abby Stuart hit behind Sommer is really helping her."

Grzybek and sophomore Max Ortega each went 2-for-3 on the day. Ortega put herself on base for Grzybek with a two-out single before the two-time All-Ivy League selection blasted a 3-2 pitch deep to center to put the Lions ahead. Ortega had an impressive weekend at the plate, going 8-for-16 with a double and four RBIs.

Grzybek backed up Canby's solid pitching with a leadoff blast on the first pitch she saw from FIU starter Kendahl Dunford (3-1) in the fourth. First-year Abby Stuart doubled four pitches later, which ended Dunford's day in place of Megan Kugelmann. Stuart went 6-for-16 (.375) in her first collegiate tournament.

Canby was the story the rest of the way. She allowed just one runner into scoring position all day but escaped the two-on, two-out jam by throwing out Jessica Rivera on a comebacker to the circle. Canby went on to retire the last seven Panthers that stepped to the plate to polish off the victory.

Columbia heads to Greenville, North Carolina next weekend for East Carolina's Purple & Gold Invitational. The Lions are scheduled for two games against the host Pirates, two against UMass and one against Winthrop.
