MIAMI, Fla. – Nine Columbia pitchers teamed up to hold Miami to six hits as the Lions claimed a 4-2 victory over the Hurricanes Wednesday night to conclude a five-game spring break road trip. Columbia (3-10) climbed out of an early two-run deficit, but took the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth and the bullpen did the rest.
Billy Black (1-1) evened his record after working a scoreless fifth inning before the Lions went on top. Ethan Abrams pitched a spotless ninth to pick up the save.
Three first inning errors gave Miami (15-6) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With a runner on first, Freddy Zamora hit a grounder to second and the Lions erased the lead runner, but the throw to first trying to complete the double play was wild, allowing Zamora to move into scoring position. Starting pitcher Saajan May induced another ground ball that got under the glove of the first baseman to bring in the opening score. Another miscue on the play pushed Adrian Del Castillo to second, however, May froze the next batter to limit the damage.
The Hurricanes made it 2-0 after Raymond Gil drew a leadoff walk, advanced on a wild pitch and scored when JP Gates posted a two-out single through the right side before Columbia worked its magic in the fourth.
Chandler Bengtson, who returned to the lineup after missing the last eight games to injury, reached on an error by the Miami shortstop. A groundout put Bengtson led to AJ DiFillipo's base-hit up the middle to cut the deficit in half.
In the sixth, Joe Engel ripped an opposite field double to right to start the rally. Bengtson was plunked in the foot followed by walks issued to Josh Nicoloff and DiFillipo to force in the tying run. Miami turned to the bullpen with one out and the bases still loaded to face Joshua Solomon. The first-year skied a fly ball that would have been deep enough for a sacrifice fly, but wound up falling between the centerfielder and rightfielder after some miscommunication between the two Hurricanes for a single. The runners were only able to move ahead one extra base, but the Lions had the lead, 3-2.
Columbia played more small ball to tack on an insurance run in the eighth. Nicoloff started things off with a single before a sacrifice and groundout pushed him to third with two away. With Ben Porter at the dish, a wild pitch went to the backstop for the Lions' fourth run of the night.
Miami threatened in the bottom of the frame, starting the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Alex Toral, who entered the game with 10 homers, hit a hard line drive right into the glove of DiFillipo at first and touched the bag for an unassisted double play. Junior Jimmy Smiley retired the following batter with a fly out to keep the Hurricanes of the board.
Liam McGill finished with two more hits to raise his batting average to .339 on the year. Engel's hit extended his on-base streak to 19 games, dating back to last season.
Del Castillo was the lone Hurricane with two hits. Siade Cecconi was saddled with the loss (2-1) despite allowing just two earned runs and five hits over 5.1 innings.
Columbia earned its second win over Miami in six tries and picked up its third win all-time against an ACC opponent.
