Lions on Top of Leaderboard Through Day 1 of NCAA Men's Championships

Columbia Fencing sits in the No. 1 spot through three rounds of bouts at the National Championships in Cleveland, Ohio.
CLEVELAND, OHIO-Columbia men's fencing currently sits in the No. 1 spot following the first three rounds of competition at the 2019 NCAA National Championships with 61 total points and a +76 indicator. Columbia's six fencers showed endurance and passion throughout the day, surrounded by teammates and fans cheering in the stands. The Lions enter day two four points ahead of Penn State, which currently holds the No. 2 spot in the standings. Defending champion Notre Dame, currently occupies the No. 4 spot behind Harvard in third place.
The Lions will face fencers from Penn State, Harvard and Notre Dame on Friday during the final two preliminary rounds. The aforementioned schools, along with Columbia, are the four schools who qualified the maximum number of fencers for the National Championship competition.
Men's Sabre Recap:
Andrew Doddo finished the day in the No. 4 spot in the men's sabre competition and finished with a 11-4 record after beating Daniel Solomon of Harvard and Alessandro Contreras of Notre Dame. Calvin Liang won 10 of his 15 bouts including wins against both Harvard representatives to end the day, earning him the No. 7 spot. Doddo and Liang are set to face off against fencers from six schools tomorrow including Ohio State and Penn State.

Sid Kumbla finished the first three rounds of competition at the No. 3 spot in the standings. Kumbla notched a 13-2 record for the day. Kumbla won notable bouts against both Notre Dame fencers Nick Itkin and Axel Kiefer. Sam Moelis finished 9-6 for the day, putting him in the No. 9 spot in the rankings. Both Kumbla and Moelis are set to face fencers from Harvard, Yale, NYU and Penn State tomorrow.

In the field of 24, Teddy Lombardo sits in the No. 2 spot in the standings with an 11-4 record. Lombardo sits behind Ohio State's Oliver Shindler who tabbed 12 wins for the day. Columbia's other epee representative, Mick Yamanaka, marked seven wins through 15 bouts, landing him in the No. 15 spot in the rankings.
