NEW YORK — The No. 13 Columbia men's tennis team maintained its unblemished home dual match record on Friday afternoon, sweeping Buffalo, 4-0, to finish off non-conference play at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
Â
"I thought it was a good match," said Columbia Tennis Alumni and Friends Head Coach
Bid Goswami. "I was a little afraid because they had beaten Harvard earlier this year, but they're also hurt a little bit, that's why both of us decided to go clinch-clinch. So, we're getting back and we'll keep on treading water."
Â
The Lions used a slightly edited lineup, as both sophomore
Jack Lin and junior
Jackie Tang were sidelined dealing with injuries.
Â
Coming off a tough trip to Texas which saw Columbia face two top-10 teams in No. 3 Texas and No. 10 TCU, the Lions got back into a rhythm by swiftly securing the doubles point to open up the match. Columbia's duo of
William Matheson/
Jason Lui claimed the first victory at three doubles, 6-1, before
Rian Pandole/
Victor Pham blanked the Bulls on court two to take the early lead.
Â
Continuing strong play into singles, the Lions won the first set on all six courts to maintain good position. Junior
Alex Keyser stretched Columbia's lead to two with a quick 6-0, 6-0 result on the bottom court before sophomore
Austen Huang took court five, 6-2, 6-1, to bring the Lions within one. Senior
Timothy Wang clinched the match, defeated Buffalo's Matthew Johnson, 6-1, 6-2, at spot four.
Â
Columbia will kick off Ivy League action next week with a pair of home duals, facing Yale on Saturday, April 6, before squaring off against Brown the following day. Both matches will begin at 1 p.m. ET.
