NEW YORK – The Columbia baseball team claimed a pair of victories, earning an 11-3 decision in game one and a 9-6 triumph in the rubber match, over Brown to win its seventh consecutive Ivy League regular season series. Senior Chandler Bengtson came through with three homers and drove in six runs combined in both contests.
In total, all five of the members of the Class of 2019 that played Sunday, contributed in the wins as Columbia hosted Senior Day between games.
The Lions (16-16, 11-4) are back in action Tuesday, April 23, against Rutgers. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium and can been seen live on ESPN+.
GAME ONE
Columbia registered eight extra-base hits, including three-straight during a five-run sixth inning that put the game away. Ethan Abrams improved to 2-1 on the year after lasting 5.1 innings, allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts. Tim Post went the final 3.2 innings to pick up his first save of the year.
After the Bears (10-21, 7-7) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Mark Sluys RBI single, the Lions answered in the bottom of the second with three runs.
Bengtson blasted his first of the day to the opposite field over the wall in left-center to tie things up with one swing of the bat. Senior Griffin Williams was later hit by a pitch, moved to third on a double from Joshua Solomon. Jack Chernow gave Columbia its first lead of the series, 3-1, with a two-run double over the head of the Brown first baseman.
With two away in the third, senior Ben Porter worked a walk to set the table for Bengtson again, who crushed the first pitch he saw into the Harlem River, for his second dinger in as many at-bats.
It was Bengtson again igniting the offense in the sixth, stealing second and advancing to third on an error on the throw after being plunked to start the frame. Solomon posted a sac fly to make it 6-1 followed by Chernow registering his second RBI hit of the contest. Doubles from AJ DiFillipo, Julian Bury and Joe Engel consecutively put Columbia up by nine.
Brown plated a pair in the seventh on Joe Lumuscio's two-run homer, but Solomon capped the scoring with his second sac fly in the bottom of the frame to cap the scoring.
Bengtson reached base in all four of his plate appearances and scored each time.
Lomuscio had four of Brown's eight hits in the opener. The Bears' 5-9 hitters were a combined 0-for-27 in both contests. Collin Carner was charged with nine runs over 5.2 innings as he fell to 2-5.
GAME TWO
Brown struck first again in the top of the first, but once again, Columbia responded and scored eight unanswered to grab an 8-2 lead after five innings. The Bears fought back, scoring twice in the sixth and seventh innings, however, Jimmy Smiley and Dan Harrington worked scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth to lock down the win.
Garret Delano launched a solo homer and Parke Phillips brought in Willy Homza to put Brown in front, 2-0. Bury and Engel started the bottom of the first with singles and moved into scoring position on a sac bunt. Bengtson stayed hot with a two-run single to right-center and later came around to score on a ground out from Williams put the Lions on top for good.
Two more productive outs with runners on third base brought the lead to 5-2 after four innings and Bengtson went deep again to start the fifth inning. Chernow provided another RBI with a base-hit to bring in Josh Nicoloff and Bury added an insurance run with a ground out with Solomon on third and less than two outs.
The Bears began to chip away on an RBI single from Parke Phillips and an error in the outfield, which allowed a run to score from first base, to make it 8-4. Porter helped the Lions get one of those runs back in Columbia's next turn on offense with a single, stolen base and came around on Nicoloff's rope single to left.
Delano's second homer of the day drew Brown within 9-6 in the seventh, but Smiley and Harrington got the job done despite putting a runner on in each of the final two frames.
Ben Wereski settled in after the two-run first, retiring 11 batters in a row at one point. He moved to 4-3 on the year, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits. Harrington was credited with his second save of the year.
Nicoloff was 3-for-5 in the finale with Bury, Porter, Bengtson, Solomon and Chernow adding two hits apiece.
Will Tomlinson, who came on for the save in Brown's win Saturday, gave up seven earned runs on eight hits over 4.0 innings.
