Two Big Innings Push St. John's Past Columbia

The Red Storm snapped a seven-game skid against the Lions with the win.

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Columbia baseball team saw its seven-game winning streak against St. John's snapped after the Red Storm picked up a 22-7 victory Wednesday afternoon. St. John's (14-10) recorded 18 hits and capitalized on three Lions (8-13) errors in the contest.

The Red Storm used a two-run homer from Sean McGeehan to take the lead in the bottom of the second. Ryan Markey notched an infield single with one out and moved to third after a failed pickoff attempt and wild pitch before McGeehan delivered his fourth homer of the year into the batters' eye in centerfield.

St. John's put the game away in the third, scoring eight runs on six hits, highlighted by a Mitchell Henshaw three-run blast.

AJ DiFillipo put Columbia on the board with his first longball of the season to cut the deficit to 10-2 in the fourth, but the Red Storm sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame to go up by 18.

A pair of miscues and an RBI single from Josh Nicoloff brought the Lions within 20-5 in the seventh. However, the Johnnie's added two more right away to regain the momentum.

Griffin Williams was 2-for-2 off the bench. Dan Harrington took the loss for the Lions (0-1).

Carson Bartels and Ryan Markey each had three hits for St. John's. Henshaw drove in four runs on the day. Ben Greenberg (1-1) was the pitcher of record after working a scoreless second inning prior to the Red Storm grabbing the lead.

An RBI fielder's choice in the ninth gave DiFillipo his third RBI of the contest. Jack Chernow closed the scoring, dropping in a single to right before the Red Storm closed things out.

Joe Engel's 26-game on-base streak was snapped after going 0-for-3.

The Lions will remain on the road for a three-game series at Princeton this weekend. The teams will meet for a Saturday twinbill on April 6, beginning at 11:30 a.m. and will conclude Sunday, April 7, with a single game at noon. All three games will be shown live on ESPN+.
