BRONX, N.Y. – Fordham erased a 2-0 deficit in the ninth inning and went on for a walk-off, 3-2, win in 11 innings Tuesday. The Lions fell to 10-15 on the year, while the Rams improved to 21-12 overall.
Columbia had the game seemingly in cruise control all the way until the ninth. Fordham loaded the bases with no outs after a pair of walks and a single. Dan Harrington was called out of the bullpen allowed a single to Andy Semo to make it 2-1. After a strikeout, Nick Labella hit a fly ball to right deep enough to bring in the tying run. Harrington fanned the next batter for the third out when play was halted due to rain.
After an 18-minute delay, pitcher Sean Higgins escaped another bases loaded jam in the 10th, Fordham broke through in the 11th. A leadoff single and groundout pushed the winning run into scoring position, and with two outs, CJ Vazquez blooped a single into shallow right to complete the comeback.
Higgins fell to 0-4 on the year, while Anthony Zimmerman (3-1) picked up the win in relief for the Rams after stranding a trio of runners in his two innings of work.
The Lions struck first in the top of the third when Lewis Menendez drew a leadoff walk and Julian Bury doubled to put runners on second and third. A passed ball allowed Menendez to scamper home and give Columbia a 1-0 lead. In the sixth, Chandler Bengtson singled and advanced to third when the ball went under the centerfielder's glove. Josh Nicoloff followed with a sharply-hit knock down the third base line to double the margin.
Ethan Abrams started the game, surrendering just two hits over three scoreless innings. Dane Miller and Leo Pollack also combined to work five shutout frames in relief.
Bury and Liam McGill each had two hits to lead the offense. Ben Porter's single in the 11th pushed his hitting streak to 15 games.
The Lions wrap up their eight-game road swing with three contests at Yale. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, April 13, beginning at 11:30 a.m., followed by the finale Sunday, April 14 at 12 p.m. All three games can be seen live on ESPN+.
