COLUMBUS, Ohio — The 16th-seeded Columbia men's tennis team's 2019 NCAA Championship run came to a close Saturday afternoon, dropping a highly-competitive Sweet 16 match, 4-1, to top-seeded Ohio State at the OSU Varsity Tennis Courts.
Columbia ends its season with a 19-4 overall record, while Ohio State improves to 32-2 on the season.
After 37 seasons, Columbia Alumni and Friends Head Coach of Men's Tennis
Bid Goswami coached his final match at the helm.
"I think we accomplished everything we had wanted to at the beginning of the year," said Goswami after the match. "The boys were unbelievable. They stayed top 20 the whole year, won the Ivies, won two big matches at National Indoors and had a good favorable draw in the NCAAs, but to come here and play, we didn't back down."
Ohio State took the upper hand after securing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. On the top court, No. 30
Jack Lin/
William Matheson fell, 6-2, to 23rd-ranked JJ Wolf and Martin Joyce, and
Adam Ambrozy/
Jason Lui fell 6-3 at three. On court two,
Rian Pandole and
Victor Pham were knotted up at 5-all when the point was clinched.
"We didn't play that good doubles," said Goswami. "It's not easy, because we play a lot more indoors and it was a little windy and the sun was bright. It kind of hurt us a little bit, missed a few volleys, but after the doubles we played really well in singles. I thought Victor played as well as he could against a guy who is probably one or two in the country and I think if he plays like this in the NCAA he can do a lot of damage."
The Lions went behind by two when
Austen Huang fell 6-1, 6-4, at No. 6 singles, but senior
Timothy Wang put Columbia on the board after earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory on court five. Wang wraps up the dual season with a 16-4 singles record, including going 3-0 in NCAA Tournament matches.
At No. 1 singles, 37th-ranked Pham battled against second-ranked JJ Wolf, taking the first set before ultimately falling 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. The Buckeyes clinched the team triumph as No. 26 John McNally defeated No. 22 Lin, 6-3, 7-5, on court two.
Ambrozy and Pandole had each forced a third sets on their courts before the match was clinched.
Pham, Lin and Matheson will be back in action May 20-25 in Orlando, competing in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in Orlando at the USTA Collegiate National Campus. Matheson and Lin will team up to compete in the 32-team doubles field, while Pham and Lin will each compete in the 64-person singles competition.
