Lions Win Brown Series with Senior Day Split

Columbia will head to Harvard for next weekend’s Ivy League Playoff Series

NEW YORK – Columbia softball closed out the regular season by splitting a doubleheader with Brown on Saturday, defeating the Bears in the first game, 5-0, before falling in the series finale, 6-1.

Columbia concludes the regular season 24-19 overall with a 15-6 record in Ivy League play, marking its most Ivy wins in program history. The Lions will move on to play Harvard in next weekend's Ivy League Playoff Series, which will be hosted by the Crimson. Harvard took two games from Cornell on Saturday to earn the right to host and clinch at least a share of the Ivy League title. The Lions would be co-champions if Cornell can win Sunday's final game.

First-year pitcher Alexa Pinarski (13-9), the reigning Ivy League Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, was the highlight of the day. She tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Lions in the 5-0 victory and went on to pitch the first four scoreless frames in game two. Brown (12-27, 5-16 Ivy) finally pushed across its first run against Pinarski in her 12th inning of work but she was dominant most of the day, allowing just seven hits in 11.2 innings with four strikeouts.

A two-run home run by Maria Pagane broke up a scoreless tie in the sixth inning of game one to give Pinarski the run support she needed. The Lions strung together six consecutive hits in the frame off starter Lauren Innerst, including three consecutive RBI hits by Max Ortega, Krystin Wong and Abby Stuart to break the game open.

The Lions were just never able to find their offense in the second game. Brown's Emily Waters (5-12) took the complete-game victory, allowing just a run on three hits, walking four and striking out three. Sommer Grzybek drove in Columbia's lone run on a drive to the right-center field wall in the sixth.

Hailey Wetherill and Maria Pagane each went 3-for-6 on the day with Pagane adding the home run and two RBIs. Ortega's RBI was her 40th, which ties the program's single-season record.

The careers of seniors Krystin Wong, Alexandra Yule, Jordan Townsend and manager Jancy Capellan were celebrated prior to Saturday's first pitch. Friends and family of the senior class joined each student on the field. The 2019 senior class is the first in Columbia history to graduate with a winning Ivy League record.

The Ivy League Playoff Series will take place Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, at Soldiers Field in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The winner of the series earns the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
