NEW YORK — The non-conference schedule for the 2019-20 Columbia women's basketball season was announced on Tuesday. The 13-game slate features seven home dates, as well as four matchups with 2019 NCAA Tournament teams.
The complete non-conference schedule can be viewed online by clicking this link. Game times, broadcasts and the 2020 Ivy League schedule will be announced at a later date.
"A new season brings new opportunities for us to get better and seek out different ways to grow and improve on what we've been building," fourth-year head coach Megan Griffith '07CC said. "Our non-conference schedule consists of five postseason teams amongst other strong competitors that will test us both on the road and home in Levien. You'll see a hungry and motivated Columbia women's basketball squad come November. This is definitely a season that our fans and supporters don't want to miss out on!"
The season tips Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Albany, just two days before the home opener that Thursday, Nov. 7, against Saint Joseph's. The Lions remain in New York that weekend to battle their first NCAA Tournament team from a year ago, Fordham. The Rams went 25-9 last year on their way to the Atlantic 10 title.
The following weekend, two more NCAA Tournament qualifiers await the Lions on the road. The first stop comes in Western New York , battling two-time reigning MAC Tournament champion Buffalo (Nov. 15). The two sides met at Levien Gym two years ago in a game that came down to the buzzer. The Lions then bus three and a half hours south to the city of Pittsburgh to face 2019 NEC champion Robert Morris (Nov. 17). The meeting will be the first between the two programs in a decade. Columbia travels back New York City for the week before concluding its three-game road swing with a short 50-mile ride upstate to Army West Point (Nov. 23).
Four straight home games span the next 22 days and take the Lions into winter break. The homestand begins Saturday, Nov. 30, as Milwaukee makes a return trip to the Big Apple. The last two games before final exams include a Friday showdown with 2019 WNIT quarterfinalist Georgetown (Dec. 6) and Columbia's first matchup with Davidson (Dec. 9) in 23 years. After a 12-day break, Columbia returns to action and concludes the homestand with a local battle against NJIT.
A trip to the Music City for Columbia's first ever games against Vanderbilt (Dec. 29) and Tennessee State (Dec. 30) will give the Lions a warmup for what awaits when Ivy League back-to-backs begin. The Lions ring in the New Year in New York for a rematch with two-time reigning Southern Conference champion Mercer (Jan. 4). It will be mark the Bears' first trip to Levien Gym since 2007.
