Newcomer inspires late rally in Ivy League debut
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Ivy League named Columbia's Abbey Hsu its women's basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday. Hsu scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Lions to a come-from-behind victory in Saturday's Ivy League opener against Cornell.
Hsu was instrumental in Columbia's seventh straight home victory and fifth fourth-quarter comeback of the season. The first year out of Parkland, Florida scored eight straight Columbia points in the final period, including a breakaway layup with 5:53 remaining before hitting back-to-back triples to extend the lead to 65-61 with 4:11 to go. Hsu finished the afternoon 5-of-7 from beyond the arc while tacking on four rebounds and an assist.
Saturday's victory gave Columbia its first 1-0 league start since 2014 and marked the second straight year the Lions defeated Cornell at Levien Gymnasium. Columbia's seven-game home winning streak ties for the longest in program history.
Hsu heads the Lions in scoring and ranks 11th in the Ivy League at 12.4 points per game. She is also top 10 in steals (1.6), 12th in minutes (30.3) and top 25 in rebounding. (4.8).
The weekly honor is the second of the season for Hsu, who also took home the award back on Dec. 23. Senior Janiya Clemmons and sophomore Sienna Durr were named to this week's honor roll.
The Lions (10-4, 1-0 Ivy) head to Ithaca for a rematch with the Big Red this Saturday. Tip from Newman Arena is set for 1 p.m.
