Lions Run Into Red-Hot Yale Squad in Friday Night Defeat

Columbia was led by strong efforts from Mike Smith (20 points) and Tai Bibbs (12 points, seven rebounds).

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Yale's Mattheu Cotton netted 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from downtown to lead the Bulldogs to a 93-62 victory over the Columbia men's basketball team Friday night. The Lions (6-13, 1-2) were led by Mike Smith, who notched 20 points to pace four double-figure scorers.

Tai Bibbs added 12 points and seven rebounds. Jake Killingsworth and Jack Forrest chipped in 11 points apiece.

The Lions started the game 2-of-3 from downtown and a jumper from Smith tied things up, 10-10, with 15:34 remaining in the first half. From there, Yale (15-4, 3-0) ripped off a 19-2 run, keyed by four 3-pointers from Cotton, over the next six-plus minutes to take a commanding lead. Columbia closed within 29-18 at the 6:35 mark after a trio of buckets from Smith. However, the Bulldogs answered with 10-straight and took a 40-21 cushion into intermission.

In the second, the teams traded shots over the first couple of minutes, but the Lions could sustain a run as Yale picked up its fourth straight win and 12th in its last 13 contests.

The Bulldogs shot 56.7 percent from the floor and 14-of-29 (48.3 percent) from beyond the arc. Yale held a 44-25 advantage on the glass and outscored the Lions 42-18 in the paint. Paul Atkinson registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards.

The Lions wrap up their three-game road swing at Brown on Saturday, February 1 for a 6 p.m. contest in Providence. Fans can watch the action live on ESPN+ and NESN+ in the New England area.
