ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In a close battle, which came down to a match at No. 1, No. 11 Columbia Men's Squash (5-7) fell 5-4 at No. 5 Rochester in a hard-fought match in Rochester, New York on Friday, Jan. 31 at the Lyman Squash Center.
Â
Columbia got wins from
Robin Mann,
Rahul Sehrawat,
Aditya Kankariya and
Hugh Camiener, but the wins were not enough for the Lions in a battle of top-15 programs.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: Rochester took an early 3-0 lead when at No. 5,
Chaitanya Shah fell in four sets, 11-7, 4-11, 4-11, 4-11, to Marcus Sim. At No. 2,
Callan Hall battled against Matthew Toth, but fell in four sets, 10-12, 6-11, 11-4, 6-11, and at No. 4
Krish Kapur fell in straight sets to Abdelrahman Lasheen, 8-11, 5-11, 6-11, to give Rochester a 3-0 lead.
Â
But the Lions bounced back, and the hunt back began at No. 8 when Kankariya fought with Emilio Carrillo through five sets. Kankariya took the first set, 11-7, but Carrillo took the next two sets, 11-7, 13-11, putting Kankariya in a hole. But Kankariya found the fight to battle back and he took the final two sets, 11-7, 11-9, to win the match and put Columbia on the board.
Â
Camiener kept the momentum in Columbia's court with a four-set win at No. 9, 11-9, 11-8, 11-13, 11-9, over Alex Riedelsheimer, putting the score at 3-2. Thijs Van der Pluijm beat Columbia's
Justin Ghaeli in straight sets, 13-11, 11-8, 11-8, at No. 6 to put Rochester up 4-2 in the match.
Â
At No. 3, the Lions got their next win of the match, when Mann knocked off Cesar Corona in straight sets, 11-9, 11-4, 11-9, making it 4-3 with Rochester still in front. But a win at No. 1 by Rochester, with
James Wyatt falling in four sets to Ashley Davies, 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 7-11, clinched the match for Rochester. The Lions did get another win at No. 7 from Sehrawat, when he battled to a five-set win, 10-12, 11-4, 11-7, 3-11, 11-6, but it was a tad bit too late as Columbia dropped the match 5-4.
