Columbia Athletics, Columbia University mourns the passing of David Stern LAW '66.
NEW YORK—Columbia University and Columbia Athletics are deeply saddened to learn of the death of former National Basketball Association commissioner David Stern LAW '66.
"David always found time for Columbia University and Columbia Athletics," Columbia's Campbell Family Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Peter Pilling said. "A tremendous supporter, he looked for ways to make himself available to assist Columbia in any way possible. Columbia University and Columbia Athletics has lost an amazing advocate, terrific confidante, and great friend in David Stern."
A graduate of Columbia Law School in 1966, David served as chair of Columbia's Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2005, at a time of great renewal and change. During his tenure, the University welcomed a new president, achieved unprecedented levels of financial stability, reinvigorated undergraduate education and strengthened ties with its neighbors.
David will, of course, be forever remembered for his transformative leadership of the NBA and his embrace of the league's players and fans. He was passionately civic-minded and supported causes dedicated to families, the arts and social justice.
David was a man of uncommon judgment, integrity, and brilliance. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
Stern was actively involved with Columbia Athletics in a variety of ways. Here are a few of his Columbia-related activities and achievements:
*Supporter of Columbia Athletics.
*Made himself available to head coaches of the men's and women's basketball teams, along with the athletic directors of the schools he attended including Columbia.
*Served as keynote speaker at the 2011 Columbia men's basketball banquet.
*Regular visitor to basketball practice at Levien Gymnasium.
*Frequent speaker at Sports Management classes within the Columbia School of Professional Studies.
*A group of Columbia Athletics personnel attended his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.
*Before his retirement as Commissioner of the NBA, volunteered members of his NBA staff to meet with members of the Columbia Athletics Program in the areas of marketing, retail, branding and ticket sales.
