No. 2 ranked women notch an undefeated 6-0 record to capture third straight outright Ivy League Championship; No. 1 ranked men place second with 4-1 record.
BOSTON—The defending national champion Columbia Fencing program completed day two of the 2020 Ivy League Round Robin Fencing Championships Saturday as the Lions' No. 2 ranked women's team won its third consecutive outright title with a 6-0 record, while the No. 1 ranked men's team finished in second place with a 4-1 record. The annual event took place at Harvard's Gordon Indoor Track.
Columbia's women's team won its third straight outright title and its fifth Ivy League Championship in six years. Columbia's men's team's streak of six consecutive Ivy League championships came to an end as Harvard finished 5-0, one match ahead of the Lions. On Sunday, both teams won all of their respective matches. Historically, Columbia tops the Ivy League in most team titles in both men's (40 titles in 90 years of competition) and women's (13 titles in 43 years) championships. Aufrichtig has guided Columbia to 11 overall titles (six men's and five women's).
"Today, Columbia Fencing showed the strength and depth of our program," Columbia Fencing Head Coach Michael Aufrichtig said. "Now, we prepare for NCAA Regionals with the goal of qualifying 12 fencers for the NCAA Championships."
Both teams entered Sunday's final day in a position to win respective Ivy League Championships as the women were in first place with a 3-0 record and men's squad in second place with a 2-1 record. Both teams did what they needed to do in the final day.
On Sunday, Columbia's women's team completed its undefeated record by defeating No. 1 ranked Princeton 17-10, topping Yale 18-9 and defeating Cornell 15-12. The Lions had two second-place finishers in Maria Chart, who went 14-4 in saber and Ester Schreiber, who finished 14-4 in foil. Also placing with marks included Daniella Timofefyev (5th place, 10-5) in saber, Natalie Minarik (5th place, 12-6) in foil and Violet Michel (7th place, 11-7) in saber. Giana Vierheller finished 8-3 and Karolina Nixon went 7-2 in epee.
On the men's side in Sunday's competition, Columbia defeated Princeton 19-8, then defeated Yale 19-8. The Lions took care of business, but needed Harvard to drop a match in order to tie for the title. That didn't happen as Harvard won its two matches.
In Saturday's competition, Columbia's women's team defeated No. 7 ranked Harvard 18-9, then slipped by No. 7 ranked Penn 14-13, and finally defeated Brown 19-8 to hold sole possession of first place. Harvard (3-1), Cornell (2-1) and Princeton (2-1) trail the Lions. Meanwhile, the men started with a 15-12 loss to No. 2 ranked Harvard, a 16-11 win over No. 9 ranked Penn and a 23-4 victory over Brown. Leading the men's squad was Teddy Lombardo (8-4) and Cedric Mecke (10-5), who both finished second in the epee competition. Josef Cohen went 8-4 and finished fourth in saber, while Sidarth Kumbla (9-4) and Sam Moelis (8-5) placed fifth and seventh respectively in foil. Also putting up winning records included Andrew Doddo (10-1 in saber), and Andrew Zheng (5-1 in foil).
