Women Finish 3-0, Men 2-1 at George Kolombatovich Historical Meet

Columbia Fencing celebrates Senior Day and the memory of former fencing coach George Kolombatovich; Women win three straight matches; Men go 2-1 against the likes of NYU, Sacred Heart and Vassar.
NEW YORK—The defending national champion Columbia Fencing program hosted NYU, Sacred Heart and Vassar in dual matches at its second annual George Kolombatovich Historical Meet Wednesday evening at University Gym (Blue Gym) in Dodge Fitness Center. Columbia's women won three straight matches and ended with an undefeated 3-0 record, while the men finished the evening with a 2-1 record.
The women defeated NYU 18-9, Sacred Heart 21-6, then Vassar 25-2. Against NYU, the Lions held advantages at all three weapons and widened its lead with a 7-2 epee lead. The Lions claimed 7-2 victories in each of the weapons against Sacred Heart, then cruised to a 25-2 win over Vassar to end the day.
Columbia's men first dropped a 16-11 decision to NYU, defeated Sacred Heart 20-7, the won 19-8 over Vassar. Following foil and saber competitions, the score was tied upon entering epee competition. NYU rallied for a 7-2 epee advantage to take the victory. Columbia held advantages in all weapons against both Sacred Heart and Vassar.
With its victory, NYU's men's team claimed the Irving Martin Preschel men's fencing trophy, while the Columbia's women's team took home the Katy Bilodeau '87CC women's trophy. The Preschel Trophy dates back to 1945 and is named in honor of Preschel, a former manager and member of the NYU fencing team who was killed in action at Heidelberg, Germany (World War II) on March 30, 1945. Bilodeau was a four-time All-American, two-time NCAA champion (1985 and 1987), two-time Olympian (1988 and 1992), and was named NCAA Athlete of the Decade for the 1980s.
Columbia honored its nine fencing seniors following the NYU match: Anne Cebula, Andrew Doddo, Isaiah Garlin, Sam Moelis, Sacha Schouker, Ester Schreiber, Giana Vierheller, and Mick Yamanaka. Columbia also honored former Head Coach George Kolombatovich.
