PREVIOUS WEEKEND: For the second weekend in a row, Columbia hit the road for three matches, this time a pair of matches in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, along with a match at Princeton, New Jersey was on the menu, and the Lions feasted for a 2-1 weekend that saw them knock off EIWA foe Drexel (19-16) and Ivy League member Penn (17-15), before falling at the Ivy League Champions, No. 16 Princeton (28-9).
At Drexel (Feb. 7), Columbia recorded wins in three of the final five matches, all involving bonus points, to lock up the EIWA road win thanks to wins from sophomores Joe Franzese (184), No. 29 Joe Manchio (125) and No. 27 Matt Kazimir (141), along with first-year victories from Angelo Rini (133) and Kyle Mosher (157). At Penn (Feb. 8), it was Rini who provided the dramatics as both Columbia and Penn were neck and neck heading into the final match at 133 pounds, but Rini would come away with a 4-3 decision to lock up another walk off win for the Lion first-year.
The match at Penn saw Mosher, first-year Lennox Wolak (174), Franzese, sophomore Danny Conley (285) and Rini all collect wins in a solid way to start a day that saw Columbia start in Philadelphia but finish in Princeton. At Princeton (285), the home of the eventual Ivy League champions (Princeton would beat Cornell the next day to win their first league title since 1986), Columbia battled hard and would get wins from Kazimir, Conley and Rini.
IMPRESSIVE MOSH: Mosher has been impressive during his first collegiate year, currently sitting at a team-high 21-10, Mosher won eight straight matches, with his last loss snapping that eight-match winning streak, coming via a 15-5 major decision to No. 5 Quincy Monday (No. 16 Princeton) at Princeton on Feb. 8, 2020. In his last 10 matches, Mosher is 8-2, having collected four wins via fall and he got his winning streak started with an SV-1 3-1 victory over Binghamton's Chris Barker on Jan. 10.
CARDIAC RINI: Rini (19-8) had himself a weekend, winning all three of his matches against Drexel (Feb. 7), Penn (Feb. 8) and Princeton (Feb. 8). What made the weekend stand out, besides the three wins, was not just the 18-1 technical fall win over Drexel's Chase Shields, or the 11-7 win over Princeton's Sean Pierson, it was his second walk-off win of the season.
Needing at least a win via decision against Penn for the team win, Rini took to the mat with a mission, and he worked a 4-3 win via decision over Carmen Ferrante to give Columbia their first Ivy League win of the season. It was the second time this season that Rini has walked off for Columbia, having given the Lions a 21-20 win over American (Jan. 19) when he won via tech fall against Daniel Kidd, 22-7, to walk-off the win in Columbia's home opener.
RANKED LIONS: Through the opening two months of the season, Kazimir (20-7) and Manchio (19-9) have both been impressive, and their strong start has been recognized by the national polls, with Manchio sitting at No. 29 at 125 pounds and Kazimir coming in at No. 27 at 141 pounds in the latest Trackwrestling rankings. Both Kazimir and Manchio each stayed put in the recent ranking, having hold their respective spots in last week's ranking.
Overall, both Kazimir and Manchio have been off to strong starts, with Kazimir already taking a pair of tournament titles (Princeton Open [Nov. 3], Patriot Open [Dec. 7]) and Manchio knocking off the then-ranked No. 14 125-pounder from Stanford and taking the Roadrunner Open (Nov. 24) title all in the same weekend.
WHAT THE BEARS BRING: Brown enters the weekend having lost three straight matches, all to Ivy League foes, with the Bears' last win coming on Jan. 25, a 19-14 win at EIWA foe Binghamton. Saturday's match will be the first of three for Brown over the weekend, as they will head out to LIU and Hofstra on Saturday, Feb. 16 for a EIWA doubleheader.
All-time Columbia owns a 36-28-1 advantage over Brown, with the series going all the way back to 1917 and this will be the 66th meeting between the two historic Ivy League programs. Brown did take the 2019 meeting, a 19-18 win in Providence, Rhode Island, and the Bears took the last meeting between the two sides on Morningside, another 19-18 final in 2018. Columbia last beat Brown in 2017, the first season in charge for Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Zach Tanelli, and the Lions last took a home match against Brown in 2016.
Brown does not currently have any student-athletes ranked nationally by Trackwrestling, or any publication, but they do have a handful of solid wrestlers, led by Ricky Cabanillas (149/157) who holds a team-best 17-12 record. Nino Bastianelli (197) sits at 14-9, while Jack Bokina (149) holds a 15-12 record to round out a few of the top student-athletes that Brown claims.
