MADISON, Wis. — Junior
Jack Lin came back from dropping the first set to clinch No. 9 Columbia men's tennis' second top-15 win in as many days as the Lions defeated No. 12 Baylor, 4-2, at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin, on Sunday evening.
Â
The victory wraps up the Lions' three-day stint in Madison as part of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. After falling to No. 3 Florida on Friday, Columbia (5-2) responded with wins over No. 14 South Carolina before besting the Bears.
Â
This is the third-straight season in which the Lions have faced Baylor (8-3), with Columbia owning a 3-1 advantage in matches played in that span. Columbia will see the Bears at least once more this season, as the Lions are set to travel to Waco, Texas, on March 17.
Â
For the first time this weekend, Columbia took the doubles point by way of triumphs on courts two and three. With a nearly simultaneous finish, the teams split the first two matches as the tandem of
Jason Lui/
Alex Kotzen turned in a 6-2 win on court three, while No. 5
Jack Lin/
Jackie Tang dropped by a matching result to No. 17 Constantin Frantzen/Sven Lah at one doubles.
Â
Coming down to the middle court,
Rian Pandole/
Adam Ambrozy battled their way to victory over No. 23 Matias Soto/Ryan Dickerson, 6-4, to clinch the early lead.
Â
The Lions continued their strong singles play from the previous day, once again gathering 4-of-6 first sets to kick things off, but Baylor evened the team scoring as No. 109 Tang fell in straight sets to No. 25 Lah on court two.
Â
Putting Columbia back in front, Ambrozy notched a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alex Garcia at No. 4 singles and the Lions would not trail again in the match. Junior
Austen Huang extended the team lead to 3-1, earning a ranked win over No. 82 Frantzen at six singles in back-to-back 7-5 sets.
Â
The Bears would take back one more, with No. 99 Kotzen falling in a hard-fought matchup at five singles, 7-6 (2), 6-4. The remaining courts would both head to a third set, with Lin ultimately securing the Columbia win, topping No. 67 Soto, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Pandole trailed 2-4 in the third set to No. 102 Adrian Boitan as play was stopped.
Â
Columbia will have nearly a two-week break before returning to competition, heading back to the Midwest to face DePaul (Feb. 28) and Northwestern (Feb. 29). Both matches will be played in Evanston, Illinois.
