NEW YORK — Four Brown players scored in double-figures, led by 20 from Brandon Anderson to give the Bears a 72-66 victory over the Columbia men's basketball team Friday night.
Mike Smith led all scorers with 22 points and now has 541 on the year to move into No. 10 on the Lions' single-season scoring list.
Jake Killingsworth added 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc to go with six rebounds.
Tai Bibbs, who celebrated his 21
st birthday, chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.
Brown (13-9, 6-3) went ahead, 14-6, on a putback from David Mitchell with 12:24 left in the first half. Killingsworth scored seven of his 16 points during a 17-3 outburst that put the Lions (6-19, 1-8) on top 28-21 at the 5:49 mark. Anderson netted the next six to put the Bears down by one just over a minute later and knotted the game, 30-30, with 3:32 to go.
From there, Columbia held Brown scoreless for the remainder of the frame and
Luke Bolster drained a pull-up jumper from just beyond the foul line to give the Lions a 35-30 cushion at the break.
Smith went to work early in the second half and posted six of the first eight Columbia points to extend the advantage to 43-32 with 17:44 left in regulation. The Bears answered with a 17-2 run over a span of six minutes to regain the lead, 51-47. Anderson's step-back jump shot gave Brown a seven-point advantage, but the Lions would not go quietly.
Smith found Killingsworth on the wing for a big triple to trim the margin to 61-60 and after a stop,
Jack Forrest came off a curl play on the inbounds to give the Lions the lead with 4:00 to play. Jaylan Gainey and Tamenang Choh each notched second-chance buckets to restore a 65-62 advantage with 2:17 on the clock.
Randy Brumant closed the gap to one again on a dunk before Choh kicked the ball out to Perry Cowan at the top of the key for a trey. Bibbs converted on a pair from the foul line to make it a one-possession game again, followed by Zach Hunsaker hitting a jumper from the right elbow with 46 seconds remaining. Smith misfired from long-range on the next trip down the floor and Hunsaker sank a pair of free throws to ice the victory.
The Bears held a 40-28 edge on the glass and had 15 offensive rebounds, leading to 14 second-chance points. Gainey finished with a double-double, registering 10 points and 12 rebounds. Choh posted 15 points, seven boards and six assists. Hunsaker added 17 points.
Columbia defended the 3-point line well for the third consecutive game, holding its opponent to under 35 percent shooting from downtown for the fourth straight game. Brown was just 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) on the night.
The Lions jump right back into action Saturday, February 22 against Yale. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+ and SNY. Columbia will officially dedicate the center court of Levien Gymnasium in honor of Jonathan Schiller '69CC '73LAW at halftime of the contest. Tickets are available by visiting
