Lions Head To Drexel; Face Penn And Princeton In Busy Road Weekend

Columbia Wrestling will take on Drexel (Feb. 7), before facing Penn and Princeton (Feb. 8) at their respective locations.
PHILADELPHIA/PRINCETON, N.J. – With one final three-match weekend road trip on the books for Columbia Wrestling (4-3, 4-2 EIWA/0-1 IVY), the Lions head out to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association match at Drexel (6-7, 2-3 EIWA) on Friday, Feb. 7 (7 p.m.), before taking on Penn (5-4, 4-1 EIWA/2-0 IVY) at The Palestra (11:30 a.m.) and No. 16 Princeton (4-4, 3-0 EIWA/2-0 IVY) in Princeton, New Jersey (4 p.m.) for a Saturday, Feb. 8 Ivy League doubleheader, with Columbia's match at Princeton being broadcast nationally on ESPNU.

TWO WIN WEEEKEND: Last weekend Columbia made a three-match road trip, taking the match at LIU, on Jan. 31, 45-3, before splitting a tri-meet at Hofstra on Feb. 1, taking down Franklin & Marshall, 25-15, before falling to hosting Hofstra, 24-14, collecting a pair of EIWA victories over the weekend. During the weekend, both sophomore Joe Franzese (184) and first-year Kyle Mosher (157) had solid weekends, with Franzese winning his two matches and Mosher taking all three matches he took to the mat in.
IMPRESSIVE MOSH: Mosher has been impressive during his first collegiate year, currently sitting at a team-high 19-9, Mosher has won six straight matches, with his last loss coming via a 3-2 decision to No. 29 Justin McCoy (Virginia) at the Midlands Championships on Dec. 29, 2019. In his last 10 matches, Mosher is 8-2, having collected four wins via fall and he got his winning streak started with a SV-1 3-1 victory over Binghamton's Chris Barker on Jan. 10.
RANKED LIONS: Through the opening two months of the season, sophomores Matt Kazimir (18-6) and Joe Manchio (18-7) have both been impressive, and their strong start has been recognized by the national polls, with Manchio sitting at No. 29 at 125 pounds and Kazimir coming in at No. 27 at 141 pounds in the latest Trackwrestling rankings. Both Kazimir and Manchio, thanks to a pair of wins each over the previous weekend, each bumped up in the latest rankings.
Overall, both Kazimir and Manchio have been off to strong starts, with Kazimir already taking a pair of tournament titles (Princeton Open [Nov. 3], Patriot Open [Dec. 7]) and Manchio knocking off the then-ranked No. 14 125-pounder from Stanford and taking the Roadrunner Open (Nov. 24) title all in the same weekend.
WHAT THE DRAGONS BRING: Drexel comes into the weekend sitting at 6-7 (2-3 EIWA), but they have lost two straight matches, with the last win coming in the form of a 28-9 victory over Binghamton on Jan. 19. During the season, Drexel has faced and lost to four ranked teams, dropping matches to then-ranked No. 4 Oklahoma State (Nov. 15, 2019), No. 10 Pittsburgh (Dec. 8, 2019), No. 25 Stanford (Dec. 19, 2019) and No. 5 NC State (Jan. 17).
Historically, Drexel holds an 8-3 record over Columbia, with the last meeting coming in 2018, when Drexel visited Morningside, taking a 27-9 win over the Lions. Columbia last beat Drexel in 2012 in a match played in Troy, New York, and throughout the 11 all-time meetings the Lions have yet to snag a win in Philadelphia.
The Dragons carry one ranked wrestler, according to Trackwrestling, with Ebed Jarrel (165) sitting at No. 21, as he holds a 13-5 record on the season. Two other Dragons have double-digit wins, with Chandler Olson, sitting at 133 pounds, coming in with an 11-4 record and Bryan McLaughlin holding a 12-11 record at 197 pounds.

The Tigers enter Saturday's matchup with Columbia having won their previous two matches, and during the season the Tigers have put themselves in harm's way, facing six ranked opponents so far this season.
All-time Columbia is 41-67-1 against Princeton, and much like Penn, the series goes all the way back to the start, with the first meeting between these two historic programs coming in 1906. The Tigers took last season's matchup, 20-16, in a close match on Morningside, and Columbia's last win over Princeton came in 2013 at home, with the last win at Princeton coming the season prior in 2012.
