FRESNO, Calif. – Julian Bury strung together three hits and extended his hitting streak to 19 games for the Columbia baseball team, in a 12-3 loss to Fresno State Sunday.
Sophomore Saajan May (0-1) got the ball to start for Columbia (0-4) and took the loss. First-year Phil Healy came out of the bullpen and threw a shutout inning with two strikeouts in his collegiate debut.
Bury wasted no time extending his streak, reaching on a single in the top of the first inning for the third time in four games. Junior Josh Nicoloff compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. Senior Liam McGill also contributed for Columbia, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.
The Bulldogs raced out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first for the fourth consecutive game and tacked on six in the third to put the game out of reach.
Trailing 12-0 in the eighth inning, Columbia loaded the bases when Mike Decker walked, Liam McGill singled and Andy Blake was hit by a pitch. Fresno State got the first out of the frame on a force play at the plate and McGill came in from third on a balk.
The Lions kept the Bulldogs off the board for the just the second time in the bottom of the eighth before narrowing the gap further in the ninth. Nicoloff's run-scoring single and a McGill sac fly highlighted an inning where Columbia scored twice, which brought the score to 12-3 in favor of the Bulldogs. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
Next up for Columbia is a four-game series at Nebraska. The Lions and Huskers begin the slate on Friday, March 6, in Lincoln. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. eastern time on BTN+.
