ITHACA, N.Y. — The Columbia field hockey team was shut out by Cornell, 5-0, Saturday in a road Ivy League contest. The Lions dropped to 6-2 overall and 0-2 in Ivy League play after the defeat, while the Big Red move to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Cornell packed the scoring circle on defense and Big Red goalkeeper Aerin Park turned away four shots.
Brooke Gasser led the Lions with four shots on the game, while
Lily Baker had three with two on target.
The game was scoreless after 15 minutes until the Big Red broke through twice in a span of 27 seconds to grab the lead in the second quarter. Caroline Ramsey gave Cornell the lead, blasting a shot off of a corner in the 18
th minute. The Big Red quickly regained possession and Elizabeth Friedberg fed Isabella Palde on the left wing for a slapshot that went in on the far side, just out of the reach of
Alexa Conomikes.
Palde struck again in the 27
th minute to give the Big Red a 3-0 advantage in the locker room. Cornell lifted an aerial pass that was deflected by a Columbia player, but wound up on the stick of Palde at the top of the circle. Palde was able to settle the ball and blast home another goal to the right side of the cage for her third of the year.
Less than a minute into the third quarter, Olivia Friedberg posted another insurance goal after driving down the left side and picked up her own rebound. Cornell capped the scoring in the 42
nd minute when Palde shuffled a centering pass to Bridget Mahoney, who notched a reverse shot to make it a five-goal contest.
