Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Lions Grab 2-1 Victory at Dartmouth

Columbia moved back over .500 and picked up its first Ivy League win of the season.

HANOVER, N.H. — The Columbia field hockey team snapped a six-game losing streak after defeating Dartmouth, 2-1, Saturday afternoon. Sophie Rockefeller had the game-winner off a penalty stroke in the second quarter and added an assist to help the Lions move back over .500 (7-6) and pick up their first Ivy League victory of the year (1-4).

The Big Green (4-9, 0-5) struck first late in the opening period. Dartmouth drew a corner and after the initial attempt could not be cleared, Meg Barnes passed it to Emelia Callahan for her third of the season.

Columbia answered with a pair in the second quarter to take the lead and held on the rest of the way. Off the opening draw, the Lions marched up the pitch and Rockefeller pushed down the left side and centered to Anabelle Brodeur, who redirected a shot through to even things up.

As time was expiring in the half, Columbia mounted more pressure in the attacking zone and were awarded the stroke with 41 seconds before the break. Rockefeller's number was called and she calmly buried the chance to put her in a three-way tie with Brodeur and Kelsey Farkas for the team lead in goals (four).

Columbia played stalwart defense in the second half, holding the Big Green to just one shot attempt and none on goal. The Lions had ample chances to add to the lead in the second half, but could not capitalize on four consecutive corners in the third quarter and two more in the final frame.

The Lions held a 15-5 edge in shots and a 9-4 advantage in corners for the game.

Columbia will wrap up its road trip with a contest against New Hampshire on Sunday, October 24. Game time is set for 2 p.m on AmericaEast.TV.
