NEW YORK — After Mike Smith '20CC was drafted in the second round of the NBA G League Draft Saturday, the Columbia men's basketball program now has seven former Lions playing professionally – six overseas and now Smith in the United States.
Smith was selected in the second round by the Skyforce, who are affiliated with the Miami Heat. Smith wrapped up his collegiate career at Michigan, helping the Wolverines reach the Elite Eight. At Columbia, the native of Chicago is the program's fourth all-time leading scorer (1,653 points) and is second all-time in assists (393).
Jeff Coby is headed to Qatar, where he will play for Alrayyan Doha. Coby played last season in the Dominican Republic and has previous experience in the NBA G League with the Austin Spurs and attended training camp with the New York Knicks in 2018.
Kyle Castlin joined BKM Lucenec in Slovakia for the season where he is playing for head coach Daniel Sokolovsky, who was a graduate manager for Columbia during the 2016-17 season. Castlin has previously played in the NBA G League with the Salt Lake City Stars (Utah Jazz) and competed with the Utah Jazz' summer league team in August.
Lukas Meisner and Maodo Lo are back playing in the top German Basketball League once again. Meisner is now on the Hamburg Towers after spending last year with Lowen Braunschweig. Meisner, who averaged 13.3 points and 4.5 rebounds last year is entering his fourth year in the professional ranks. Lo is back with Alba Berlin after helping the club win the league title last year.
In Poland, Luke Petrasek is suiting up for Anwil Wloclawek and is off to a strong start, averaging 14 points and six rebounds through eight games. Petrasek is a five-year veteran, who's previous stops include the Greensboro Swarm (G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets), Germany and Russia.
KJ Matsui is back playing in Japan for his 11th season and first playing for the Toyama Grouses and has started seven of the clubs' first eight contests.
Columbia begins the 2021-22 season Tuesday, November 9 at Fordham for an 8 p.m. contest. The Lions first home game is three days later against Marist on Friday, November 12 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by visiting gocolumbialions.com/tickets or calling 888-LIONS-11.
