NEW YORK — Penn scored as time expired in the first quarter and held off the Columbia field hockey team, 1-0, Friday night. The Quakers' (7-7, 4-2) Gracyn Banks did it all, netting the game-winner and also coming up with two defensive saves despite a strong effort from the Lions, who dropped to 7-8 overall and 1-5 in Ivy League play.
Columbia held a 13-5 advantage on shots and forced goalkeeper Sabien Paumen to make six saves on the night, but could not get one through.
A pair of corners in the opening moments gave the Lions the first offensive chances of the game. Paumen made one stop and Banks cleared one aside to keep the game scoreless. With seven seconds left in the frame, Banks' hit off the set up hit the blocker of
Alexa Conomikes and found room at the top of the cage.
From there, Penn was held without a shot attempt until the fourth quarter and Columbia maintained the bulk of possession in its attacking zone. However, the Quakers limited quality chances and rebound opportunities to come away victorious.
Elizabeth Brissette led the Lions with three shots and senior captain
Kelsey Farkas made her return to the lineup after missing the last seven games due to injury.
