THE LATEST
Columbia has won its last two matches, each by scores of 5-4. Both wins came out home last weekend, starting on Friday with a comeback win over No. 7 Drexel and following on Sunday with a victory in the team's Ivy League opener against Cornell.
On Friday, Columbia went down 4-2 to the Dragons before mounting a comeback. Sarah Cao started the rally with a win at No. 5 to pull the Lions within a point. First-year Simmi Chan leveled the score soon thereafter from the No. 1 position with a four-game win, leaving just Bunny Fox and Drexel's Ciara Richards left at the No. 7. After dropping the first game, Fox took a decisive 11-4 win in game two and used that momentum to finish off the match, 11-8, 11-6.
Two days later, the Lions earned a slightly more comfortable 5-4 decision. Sisters Farida and Habiba Mohamed each won in four games at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively, while Ellie McVeigh (6) and Renee Chan (8) earned points on the lower courts to put Columbia in position to win. Sarah Cao clinched it from the five, winning her first two games and bouncing back from a 12-10 loss in game three to finish it out in four, 11-7.
LAST TIME AGAINST WILLIAMS
Columbia will hope for repeated success against the Ephs on Saturday, having defeated them the last time the two teams met, 9-0, in New York. Current Lions Habiba Mohamed, Erica McGillicuddy and Ellie McVeigh all earned points in that victory. All but two of the matches were decided in three games.
STILL UNBEATEN
Farida Mohamed and Habiba Mohamed are the two Lions with unbeaten 3-0 records heading into Saturday's matchup. The sister duo have competed in one of the top three positions all season.
