Columbia Heavyweight Alumni John Tanguay '20CC, a member of the US Rowing PR3 Mixed Four w/Cox, will open up his 2020 Paralympic Games campaign on Thurs., Aug. 26.
TOKYO — Columbia Heavyweight Rowing alumni John Tanguay '20CC has put in the work and now he gets a chance to join his fellow Columbia Olympians as he will represent US Rowing at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games as a member of the PR3 Mixed Four w/Coxswain, with the Opening Ceremonies of the Paralympic Games set to get going at 7 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, Aug. 24 in Tokyo, Japan.
Tanguay's first race is scheduled to get going at the Sea Forest Waterway on Thursday, Aug. 26 at 8:30 p.m. EDT. The race will be streamed on NBColympics.com.
A member of US Rowing's 2019 World Championship squad, that took silver, Tanguay joins nine other former Columbia student-athletes to bring Columbia's total 2020 Olympians to 10. It's a school-record, breaking the previous record of eight former Lions who competed at the 2012 London Summer Olympics.
Columbia's Boathouse has been a big part of Columbia's record setting year at the Olympics, with Women's Rowing alumni Charlotte Buck '18CC (US Rowing Women's Eight) and Lightweight Rowing's Jakub Buczek '16CC (Canada Men's Four) competing during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
To qualify, Tanguay had to earn his spot in the boat, competing with three men and four women for a coveted seat in the boat. Tanguay, who was born with "clubfoot", earned his way onto the water with Columbia taking the 1V during his sophomore season, before moving to the 2V for his junior year on the Hudson.
In total, USRowing will be sending four boats to the Paralympic Games. The PR1 men's single sculls, PR1 women's single sculls, and PR2 mixed double sculls were selected through the 2020 U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Team Trials – Rowing in April.
