BREINIGSVILLE, Pa.—Former Columbia men's golfer David Stanton '77 won a National Championship and Gold Medal at the USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships in September. Stanton captured the men's age 65-69 division pursuit title.
Representing the Canyon Velo team out of Newport Beach, Calif., Stanton finished the 2-kilometer course (six laps) in two minutes, 36 seconds (2:36.309). His closest competitor was a full second behind at (2:37.744). Stanton was in fourth place at the first 1,000-meters, moved into second place by the 1,500-meter mark, then burst into the lead in the final 500 meters to capture Gold.
Stanton, who took up cycling 10 years ago, has spent the previous four years competing at cycling events across the United States. He recently "aged-up" to the 65-69 division and his national championship has been the result. He also defeated a former Olympic champion in Kent Bostic, and multiple other national champions.
Stanton was a three-year letterman on the Columbia men's golf team from 1975-77.
