Lions finish 10th in spring opener
SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Columbia men's golf team finished 10th at The Savannah Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event took place on Saturday and Sunday at The Club at Savannah Harbor.
Windy conditions all weekend long made for difficult play, especially on Sunday. Winds during the final round were sustained at 25-35 miles per hour most of the round, with even higher wind gusts. The Sunday scoring average was 79.17, more than seven shots over par.
Columbia was led by seniors Darren Pang and George Rubelsky, each of whom finished the tournament at 7-over-par 223. Pang carded the fifth-best round of the entire 108-player field on Sunday, shooting a 2-over 74. It shot him 21 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 17th. Rubelsky fired off opening rounds of 3-over 75 and 2-under 70 on Saturday to enter Sunday just outside the top 10. He battled through Sunday's tough conditions to post a 78 and also tie for 17th.
Columbia (+39) shot one of the better team rounds on Sunday of 18-over-par 306. It tied for the fifth-best team round of the day.
The top 11 teams in the field were separated by just 16 shots. West Georgia claimed the tournament title at 24-over-par 888.
The Lions return to action next Monday and Tuesday, March 2-3, to compete in the Sam Ryder Intercollegiate. The tournament will be held at LPGA International's Jones Course in Daytona Beach, Florida.
