Seven of nine matches decided in three games as Lions sweep Bobcats
LEWISTON, Maine — Columbia had no trouble returning from a month-long break from matches, as the sixth-ranked Lions skated past No. 16 Bates College, 9-0, Tuesday morning on the Bobcats' campus.
Just two of the nine matchups went longer than three games and none of the nine went past four. Senior Habiba Mohamed stayed unbeaten on the season with a 12-10, 11-3, 11-1 victory to start things off and the Lions rolled to their fourth consecutive victory.
"In general, I think it was good to get the team out there and work off any holiday rust," Columbia interim head coach Joanne Schickerling said. "It's good to get back into the right mindset and play matches again. Every win we get just gives us more confidence. The team was really focused today and worked really well."
Sarah Cao, Erica McGillicuddy and Ellie McVeigh played in positions 2-4, respectively, and also took down their opponents in straight games. Meanwhile, junior Cindy Cao got her first top-nine action of the season and defeated her opponent, Cordella Dotson, 11-9, 11-4, 11-7. Julia Fink earned her first collegiate top-nine win with an 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 12-10 decision at the No. 9 spot.
"It was really great to have two players get in there with Cindy making her season debut and Julia getting her first win in the top nine," Schickerling added. "I could really see how much Julia has grown since her last match."
The Lions will now get set for a pair of tough home matches this weekend, hosting No. 2 Trinity on Saturday and No. 4 Yale on Sunday at the SL Green StreetSquash Center.
