Lions Lose, 32-3, At No. 23 Penn

Columbia Wrestling fell, 32-3, at No. 23 Penn in a Sunday Ivy League matchup at The Palestra.

PHILADELPHIA — Columbia Wrestling (1-5, 1-3 EIWA, 0-2 IVY) dropped its Ivy League matchup at No. 23 Penn (1-1, 1-0 EIWA, 1-0 IVY), 32-3, in a Sunday matinee matchup at The Palestra.

Columbia's lone win of the match came in the final bout when No. 21 Joshua Ogunsanya knocked off No. 25 Lucas Revano via decision.  One bright spot for the Lions was that despite dropping nine of the bouts, Penn only got bonus points in three of the bouts, which kept the Lions in the fight for the majority of the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The match begun at 174 pounds, where Nick Fine dropped his match to No. 25 Nick Incontrera via decision, 10-6.  Fine battled hard throughout the match, and it set a tone for the day of the Lions battling hard against the Quakers.

In his second match of the weekend, Jack McGill faced No. 32 Neil Antrassian at 184 pounds, and again the Lions showed fight.  McGill would lose via decision, 5-2, but with only two decision the Quakers held a slight lead, 6-0, after two matches.

The next three bouts would go the way of Penn, all decisions, as Cole Urbas beat Sam Wustefeld (197), 8-2, No. 33 Ben Goldin defeated Danny Conley (285), 6-0, and in a battle of ranked grapplers No. 29 Ryan Miller beat No. 18 Joe Manchio, 4-2.

Following Manchio's bout at 125 pounds, the Quakers led 15-0 as the match flipped the page to the second half.

Penn got its first bonus points of the match at 133 pounds when No. 19 Michael Colaiocco beat Angelo Rini via major decision, 14-4, and at 141 pounds No. 19 CJ Composoto added more bonus points with a technical fall win, 20-5, over Mason Clarke.  After the two post-break matches Penn had extended its lead to 24-0.

Over the final three matches, Penn would win two, with No. 24 Anthony Artalona beating Dominic Rossetti, 5-2, in a close decision at 149 pounds and No. 22 Doug Zapf winning via technical fall, 20-5, against Andrew Garr at 157 pounds.

Columbia ended the match on a positive note, when Ogunsanya, in another ranked battle, calmly earned a 3-2 decision over Revano.  Ogunsanya used an escape midway through, and a quick shot to takedown to get the three points he needed, controlling the mat for all three periods on his way to the win.

But overall, Ogunsanya's win could not change the outcome of the match as Penn won, 32-3.
