LAST TIME OUT: The Lions spent the previous weekend of Jan. 22-23, opening Ivy League play when they visited No. 21 Princeton (Jan. 22) and No. 23 Penn (Jan. 23). Columbia dropped both matches, falling at Princeton, 27-12, and at Penn, 32-2, and the pair of losses extended Columbia's stretch of four dual meet defeats. Despite that stretch the Lions have faced ranked teams in all four of those losses and have come close at both No. 17 Lehigh and No. 21 Princeton.
At Princeton, the Lions got four wins, starting with Angelo Rini at 133 pounds, when he defeated Nick Kayal via 13-7 decision. His win was followed up by back-to-back wins, giving the Lions three straight at the start, when No. 18 Matt Kazimir (141) beat Danny Coles via 1-0 decision and Dominic Rossetti knocked off Marshall Keller in the third overtime, 5-4.
Columbia added a win from Nick Fine at 174 pounds, when he beat Nate Dugan via a 6-0 decision, but over the final three weights of 184-285, the Lions could not find a win and the stretch gave Princeton what it needed to win the match.
At The Palestra on Jan. 23, the Lions were only able to get one win, when No. 21 Joshua Ogunsanya calmly worked a 3-2 decision over No. 25 Lucas Revano in the final match of the day. Both losses dropped Columbia's record to 1-5 and 0-2 to start the Ivy League play.
RANKED LION WINS: Five Lions have earned themselves at least one win over a ranked opponent so far this season.
125 | Joe Manchio
The fastest pin came from Ogunsanya who stuck Blake Bahna at 2:37 and right behind him was Baker, who much like Ogunsanya, didn't let his match get out of the first round sticking Karl Bouyer at 2:42. Rini got his pin at 3:17, while Fine ended his match at 4:11 and Brian Bonino's win via fall came at 4:45.
RANKED LIONS: Columbia enters the weekend in five ranked nationally by either the NCAA Coaches' Panel, FloWrestling or Intermat. Leading the way is Kazimir, who comes in at No. 12 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel and No. 16 in both Flo's and Intermat's rankings.
Joe Manchio sits at No. 16 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel, No. 18 in Flo's rankings and No. 28 in Intermat's rankings, while Ogunsanya also holds the same ranking in both polls, coming in at No. 21 and he sits at No. 18 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel. Rounding out Columbia's national ranked wrestlers is Fine (174) and Kyle Mosher (157), with Fine coming in at No. 33 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel and Mosher holding an Honorable Mention from Flowrestling.
CAPTAINS OF THREE: At the start of the season, at Columbia's outdoor practice during Columbia Football's Homecoming game on Oct. 16, 2021, Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Zach Tanelli announced that Kazimir and Manchio will be joined by Bonino as the 142nd, 143rd and 144th Lions to be named team captains for the 2021-22 season.
"All three bring unique elements to the program that consistently elevate the men and women of this team to be better versions of themselves," said Tanelli. "They deserve to have a title associated with their leadership."
BINGHAMTON MATCHUP: This will be the 13th meeting all-time between the two in-state foes, with the Lions taking the previous meeting, 24-15, in 2020 and Columbia comes in with an 7-5 advantage all-time. This will be the second straight time visiting Binghamton, with 2019 being the last time the Bearcats visited Morningside.
Coming in at 5-9, the Bearcats already have EIWA wins over Sacred Heart, Drexel and LIU, with the previous two wins against Drexel and LIU coming in Binghamton's previous two matches. Before that they had lost four-straight to top opponents, including No. 7 North Carolina State and EIWA foe, No. 17 Lehigh.
Lou DePrez (197) leads Binghamton in terms of rankings, coming in at No. 13 by the NCAA Coaches' Panel, while at 285 Joe Doyle sits at No. 19 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel, giving the Bearcats a strong pair of heavier weights. Both Anthony Sobotker (133) and Ryan Anderson (141) sit at No. 33 respectively in the NCAA Coaches' Panel to round out Binghamton's four ranked grapplers.
NAVY MATCHUP: For the first time since 2008, Columbia and Navy will face in a dual meet, in what will be the 23rd all-time meeting between the two old EIWA members, with Navy holding a 22-0 all-time advantage. Despite Navy being one of the older members left in the EIWA, having joined with Army in 1941, the two sides have rarely met in dual meets, with most meetings between the Lions and Midshipmen coming at tournaments.
The Midshipmen come in at 3-2, having won their previous three duals against Hofstra, Ohio and Cleveland State, and their EIWA record sits at 1-1, with the lone win coming over Hofstra. Besides the Navy Classic on Nov. 20, 2021, the Midshipmen, much like the Lions, have been on the road for their entire season, with the Midshipmen not returning home until Feb. 4 when they host Bucknell.
At 133 pounds, Joshua Koderhandt holds the highest ranking in the NCAA Coaches' Panel, coming in at No. 19. He is joined in the NCAA Coaches' Panel by Andrew Cerniglia (157) who sits at No. 22, David Key (184) who sits at No. 26 and 197 pounder Jake Koser who comes in at No. 24, giving Navy four wrestlers ranked in the NCAA Coaches' Panel.
CORNELL MATCHUP: Once again one of the better programs in the nation, Columbia visits No. 11 Cornell for the second straight time, last hosting the Big Red in 2019. The meeting on the mat will be the 109th meeting between the old Ivy League foes, with Columbia's last win coming in 1986 as the Big Red hold a 94-14 all-time advantage over the Lions.
The Big Red come in with a 6-2 overall record, having won their last three duals over Army (Jan. 15), Harvard (Jan. 22) and Brown (Jan. 22) by a combined score of 104-19 and the previous two wins gives Cornell an 2-0 record in the Ivy League. Cornell has faced a handful of ranked opponents, beating then-ranked No. 8 Virginia Tech, No. 22 Northern Iowa and No. 23 Stanford, but the big upset came in Cornell's lone EIWA loss when they dropped their dual at then-ranked No. 17 Lehigh on Jan. 8.
From top-to-bottom Cornell has a large collection of ranked grapplers in the NCAA Coaches' Panel, with two ranked at the top of their respective weight classes with Vitali Arujau and Yianni Diakomihalis sitting at No. 1 at 125 and 149 pounds respectively. They are joined by Dom Lajoie (133) who is at No. 27, Julian Ramirez (165) who comes in at No. 8, Chris Foca (174) at No. 10, Jonathan Loew (184) who sits at No. 17, Jacob Cardenas (197) at No. 19 and at 285 pounds Lewis Fernandes comes in at No. 17 to round out a strong Big Red lineup.
