NEW YORK—Campbell Family Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education Peter Pilling has announced the appointment of Marquise Stancil as Director of Leadership and Well-Being for Columbia Athletics. Stancil will officially join Columbia's Success Through Well-Being team on January 18.
Stancil joins the Success Through Well-Being team after serving the past six years as an assistant track and field coach at Columbia. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Stancil has taken an active role in the department's We Roar Together Committee. He is an original member of Columbia Athletics' Diversity, Racial Justice, Equity & Inclusion Committee and is committed to providing the community and student-athletes a diverse, inclusive, and socially equitable culture and experience. Marquise currently serves as the interim chair of this committee. Additionally, he is the chair of the Black, Indigenous and People of Color Student-Athlete & Staff Experience and Success sub-committee and is a co-founder and co-advisor of the Black Student-Athlete Alliance.
"We are excited to welcome Marquise to our Success Through Well-Being team," Pilling said. "Marquise has the ability to foster connections within the student-athlete population. As a coach and through his participation with our We Roar Together Committee, in particular, his role in co-founding and co-advising our Black Student-Athlete Alliance, he has demonstrated a passion and commitment to student-athlete support."
Under Stancil's tutelage as the assistant track and field coach for sprints, hurdles, and relays, seven Lions won individual Ivy League titles, 10 student-athletes set school-records in their respective events, five student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships, and one athlete qualified for the Olympic Games in 2016. In addition, Stancil's athletes posted 89 marks that rank among the top-10 best times in school history.
Stancil is a 2009 graduate of Temple University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education: mathematics. He also earned a Master of Education degree in urban education and leadership from Temple. He has USTFCCCA certifications in track & technical coaching, program management, and strength & conditioning. Prior to arriving at Columbia in 2016, Stancil spent a year and a half as an assistant track and field coach at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa. (2014-16) and five years at his alma mater (2009-14).
"We are incredibly excited for Marquise to join our Success Through Well-Being team," said Jessica DePalo, Columbia's Senior Associate Athletics Director for Success Through Well-Being. "In his previous role, Marquise worked closely with our team to ensure student-athletes were connected with student-athlete support resources. Additionally, Marquise has provided support with Success Through Well-Being programming and has demonstrated a passion to work in the student-athlete support services space."
"I am grateful for this opportunity as I pivot to the administration side of Columbia Athletics," Stancil said. "I am very enthused about working with the Success Through Well-Being team, as they are an integral part of the Columbia student-athlete experience. I am looking forward to supporting the student-athlete community at large and providing a space where student-athletes will feel safe, empowered, and equipped with the necessary tools to have a healthy and successful holistic experience during their time at Columbia University."
