NEW YORK — New Hampshire's Tasmin Cookman scored just under three minutes in overtime to pick up a 2-1 victory over the Columbia field hockey team Sunday afternoon. The Lions (5-9) held an edge in nearly every team stat, including shots (20-17) and corners (8-7), but the Wildcats (8-8) escaped with a win.
The contest marked Senior Day for the seven members of the Class of 2023. Before the match, Columbia honored Lucy Holzinger, Elizabeth Brissette, Meredith Heaney, Ellie Decker, Frederique Fyhr, Sarah Considine and Zoe Metalios.
Sophomore Katie Wimmer had another strong performance, making six saves on the day. She was matched by New Hampshire's Jemma Woods, who turned away nine shots.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Nicole Poulakis drew and converted on a penalty shot to give UNH the early lead. From there, the goalies stole the show, each making several impressive saves under pressure.
Early in the third quarter, Columbia finally broke through, led by some strong play by its seniors. MK Myklebust inserted a corner to Fyhr, who fired a hard shot tipped in from Heaney on the right post to knot things at 1-1. The score marked Heaney's first career tally and the first point of Fyhr's career as well.
Immediately after the tying goal, Wimmer was forced to make a pair of huge saves. The first was sticked away off a shot from the right by Cookman, and the rebound went to Juliane Ohmen for another try that was turned away with a pad save to keep things even.
The score remained that way until overtime, when the Wildcats capitalized off their first corner of the extra frame. The insert went to Cookman, who worked a give-and-go with her sister Tamera, to beat Wimmer to walk things off.
Decker led the Lions with four shot attempts.
The Lions return to action at Penn on Friday, October 28, for a 3 p.m. contest on ESPN+.
