NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Columbia men's swimming and diving remains undefeated, moving onto a 4-0 record after dramatically defeating the Yale Bulldogs, 151-149, on Saturday afternoon.
Points went back and forth in a contest that came down to the final event. First-place finishes in eight individual events allowed the Lions to steal the show after the Bulldogs took the first event.
Senior Jonathan Suckow and first-year Adam Wu were again front and center to spearhead the Lions' victory. Suckow broke Yale pool records in both diving competitions (407.1 - one-meter, 449.4 – three-meter) to continue his winning ways. Wu posted three individual victories for the second consecutive day, winning the 1,000 freestyle, the 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle.
Sophomore Demirkan Demir was also a big part of Columbia's success, winning the 100 (55.01) and 200 (2:00.27) breaststroke.
The 200-yard breaststroke saw two Lions in the top three, with Demirkin Demir (2:00.27) placing first and Michael Zhang (2:06.33) touching the wall third.
The penultimate event, the 200 IM, was crucial to Columbia's eventual success, with the Lions sweeping the first three slots. Stanford Li clocked in at 1:50.46 for a first-place finish, followed by Demir in 1:51.09, and Kyle Won taking third, turning in a time of 1:51.93.
While the final event of the meet went to the Bulldogs, the Lions' second-place finish secured them the points they needed to come away with the win.
This is the first time in over a decade that the Lions are starting with four wins to begin a season.
ON DECK - Columbia hits the road to face Harvard on Friday, November 18, for a 1 p.m. meet. The Lions aim to extend their opening win streak to five and earn their fourth conference win.
