
Men's, Women's Tennis Represent Columbia at ITA Fall National Championships

Zheng, Westphal, Winegar, Tewolde, Amineni complete their runs at the championships
SAN DIEGO – First-year Michael Zheng, sophomore Max Westphal, and junior Theo Winegar of Columbia men's tennis competed valiantly over the last few days at the ITA Fall National Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center. The event concluded Sunday.
Zheng earned a spot in the Championships after winning the Northeast Super Regionals singles tournament hosted by Harvard. Unfortunately, he fell in the round of 32 on Wednesday, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6, losing the tiebreaker 7-4 against Geronimo Busleiman from the University of Utah
However, Zheng would bounce back with a 6-1, 6-4 win in the round of 16 of the consolation tournament on Thursday. With a bye in the quarterfinals, he won his semifinal match on Saturday 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the finals Sunday, where he took down Alexander Hoogmartens of UCLA, 6-1, 6-3. The first-year began the season ranked third in the ITA Division I Men's Freshman/Newcomer preseason rankings and also won the Wimbledon Junior Boys' Championship in July.
Meanwhile, Westphal and Winegar defeated Brian Cernoch and Ryan Seggerman from the University of North Carolina in the first round, 6-1, 7-5 on Wednesday. The duo won their second match 6-2, 7-6, winning the tiebreaker 10-7. The pair would fall in the quarterfinals, 7-4, 4-6, losing the tiebreaker 8-10 on Friday.
On the women's side Winta Tewolde and Shivani Amineni of Columbia gained a Championships berth after advancing to the doubles final of the Northeast Super Regionals hosted by Yale. They fell to Janice Tjen and Savannah Broadus from Pepperdine University in the first round Wednesday, 6-1, 6-2. Subsequently, they fell in the first round of the consolation tournament 6-2, 5-7, 10-3.
