Soccer, Golf, and Volleyball featured in this week's edition

NEW YORK — Columbia men's soccer, women's golf, volleyball, men's golf, and women's soccer are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com previews the upcoming games and events taking place away from home.

Men's Soccer
The men's soccer team has three road games over a seven-day span, beginning Wednesday night in the Bronx against Fordham. The Lions will look to make it three wins in a row in the series against the Rams, which included a dominating 5-1 triumph last October at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. They'll renew another NYC rivalry Saturday afternoon against Manhattan. Columbia had controlled that series, holding a 10-1-3 all-time record, which includes a 2-0 win last year at the Lions' home turf. The busy stretch concludes Tuesday, September 15, at Temple. It'll be the first matchup between the two sides in a decade, The last time they met, October 11, 2016, the Lions walked away with a thrilling overtime victory, 1-0. Kynan Rocks buried the game-winner four minutes into OT.

The Lions are averaging 2.5 goals per contest over their first two matches of the season, and rank among the top 25 in the NCAA in scoring. They're average of 8.00 shots on goal per game ranks 12th in the nation. Senior Jack McDaid and first-year Ethan Heyward were named to this week's Ivy League Men's Soccer Honor Roll after scoring and creating goals in Saturday's 3-3 draw against Fairfield. McDaid netted a brace with each goal coming by way of a penalty kick. Heyward helped draw the first penalty while McDaid was fouled in the box to draw the second. Heyward then scored a late go-ahead goal off assists from the McDaid brothers. Jack McDaid's five points were the most in a single game by a Lion since John Denis in 2019.

Women's Volleyball
The Lions look to continue their winning streak when they travel to Erie, Pa., for the Laker Invitational hosted by Mercyhurst. The two-day tournament begins Friday when Columbia takes on the tournament host Lakers at 1 p.m. Later that afternoon, the Lions will tangle with Niagara at 4 p.m. The weekend concludes when Columbia battles Kent State on Saturday at 11 a.m. All three matches this weekend will be streamed on NEC Front Row; fans can also follow the action via live stats. As previously mentioned, the Lions are off to a strong start after going 3-0 at the Big Apple Tournament. Columbia has opened the year 3-0 just four times in program history, most recently in 2014. On Tuesday, senior outside hitter Avery Jones and first-year outside hitter Elise Hiemstra were named the Ivy League Player and Newcomer of the Week. It is the first time since 2019 the Lions have swept the weekly awards. Jones led the Lions with 31 kills and set a career-high with 18 kills in the win over Lafayette on Saturday. Hiemstra made her collegiate debut against Iona on Saturday night and had a match-high 19 kills. As a team, the Lions are averaging 14.25 kills per set while hitting .249.
