Lions sit in fifth following second day of Ivy League championships.
Princeton, NJ -- Junior diver Jonathan Suckow reclaimed the Ivy League one meter title after posting a meet-record score of 398.25 in the second day of the 2022 Ivy League Men's Swim and Dive Championships. The 2018 & 2019 Ivy League champion and Diver of the Year collects his third championship victory in the event after not competing collegiately during the 2020 season. Bolstered by Suckow's performance, Columbia sits in fifth with 272 points after seven events.
"This was a standout performance, even by Johnny's standards," reflected head dive coach Scott Donie. "He was in total command from start to finish, it was an absolute pleasure to witness."
Senior Jonas Kistorp led head coach Jim Bolster's Lions from the pool, claiming third place in the 50 freestyle A final. Kistorp's NCAA D1B time of 19.49 broke through a quartet of Harvard swimmers, denying the Crimson an event sweep. Senior Albert Gwo swam for third in the B final with an NCAA D1B performance of his own (19.83).
Kistorp and Gwo joined forces with sophomore Hayden Liu and junior Thomas Shepanzyk for a bronze medal finish in 200 free relay. The team dropped nearly two seconds from its preliminary time to touch the wall in 1:18.93.
Earlier Thursday evening, sophomore Seung Joon Ahn contended in the 500 free B final, taking sixth in 4:23.92. First-year Demirkan Demir touched the wall in 1:47.34 for a seventh place result in the 200 IM.
Competition resumes tomorrow as Columbia readies to compete in the preliminary heats at 11:00 A.M. while finals are set for 6:00 P.M.
