Lions Head To No. 19 Pitt

Columbia Wrestling will face their seventh ranked opponent when they head to western Pennsylvania for a dual at No. 19 Pitt on Sunday, Feb. 6.
PITTSBURGH — Columbia Wrestling (2-7, 2-5 EIWA, 0-3 IVY) remains on the road for another weekend as "The Nation's Oldest Program" heads to western Pennsylvania to face the its seventh ranked opponent of the season when they visit the No. 19 Pitt Panthers (6-4, 1-1 ACC) in a Sunday afternoon dual set to get going at 2 p.m. on Feb. 6 at the Petersen Events Center.

LAST TIME OUT: Columbia's last weekend was a busy one, as the Lions dropped a close dual at Binghamton (19-16), snaped its five-match skid with a 20-15 win over Navy and lost to No. 11 Cornell (31-9) in a doubleheader held in Ithaca, New York.
The Lions got wins from No. 28 Joe Manchio (125), Angelo Rini (133), Dominic Rossetti (149), Andrew Gar (157) and Nick Fine (174) in the dual at Binghamton but dropping the final three weight classes would cost them that dual.
In the dual against Navy, the Lions got wins from Manchio (125), Rini (133) No. 16 Matt Kazimir (141), Rossetti (149), No. 21 Joshua Ogunsanya (165) and a dual winning victory at 184 pounds from Brian Bonino. Columbia's dual against Cornell produced a win from Kazimir and Ogunsanya in the Ivy League matchup.
In the dual winning victory against Navy, Bonino walked away with a 5-3 decision over No. 29 David Key, the first win over a ranked opponent in the senior captain's career. As for Rini, he collected a pair of ranked wins over the weekend, knocking off Binghamton's No. 30 Anthony Sobotker and Navy's No. 21 Josh Koderhandt.
RANKED LION WINS: Five Lions have earned themselves at least one win over a ranked opponent so far this season.

For the first time since the week of Nov. 1, 2021, Rini has cracked the national rankings, helped by his pair of ranked wins over the weekend. And the Lion 133-pounder comes in at No. 25 in Intermat's rankings and has earned an honorable mention in FloWrestling's rankings.
At 141 pounds, Kazimir who comes in at No. 12 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel and No. 19 in both Flo's and Intermat's rankings. Manchio sits at No. 16 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel, No. 19 in Flo's rankings and No. 28 in Intermat's rankings, while Ogunsanya also holds the same ranking in both polls, coming in at No. 23 and he sits at No. 18 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel.
Rounding out Columbia's national ranked wrestlers is Fine (174) and Kyle Mosher (157), with Fine coming in at No. 33 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel and Mosher holding an Honorable Mention from Flowrestling.
PIN PARTY: During Columbia's domination of LIU, the Lions stuck five Sharks on the way to the win. The five pins were the most for the Lions since 2006, where they collected six pins against Wagner in a 53-3 win.
The fastest pin came from Ogunsanya who stuck Blake Bahna at 2:37 and right behind him was Michael Baker, who much like Ogunsanya, didn't let his match get out of the first round sticking Karl Bouyer at 2:42. Rini got his pin at 3:17, while Fine ended his match at 4:11 and Bonino's win via fall came at 4:45.
CAPTAINS OF THREE: At the start of the season, at Columbia's outdoor practice during Columbia Football's Homecoming game on Oct. 16, 2021, Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Zach Tanelli announced that Kazimir and Manchio will be joined by Bonino as the 142nd, 143rd and 144th Lions to be named team captains for the 2021-22 season.
"All three bring unique elements to the program that consistently elevate the men and women of this team to be better versions of themselves," said Tanelli. "They deserve to have a title associated with their leadership."
PITT MATCHUP: In what will only be the third meeting all-time, the Lions and Panthers will meet in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the third time in history and the first time since 2012. All-time the Panthers hold a 2-0 advantage over the Lions, having won both duals between the two programs held in 2010 and 2012.
Before facing the Lions, Pitt will head to Chapel Hill, North Carolina for a Friday, Feb. 4 ACC meeting against No. 24 North Carolina in a ranked meeting. Pitt carries a 6-4 record into the weekend, having dropped their previous dual to ACC-foe then-ranked No. 8 Virginia Tech on Jan. 30, but they had won their previous two duals before that meeting against the Hokies.
Among their probable lineup, Pitt enters the dual with seven grapplers ranked nationally by Intermat. The Panthers are led by No. 7 Micky Phillippi (133) and No. 7 Nino Bonazzorsi (197). Those pair ranked Panthers are joined by No. 14 Jake Wentzel (165), No. 17 Cole Matthews (141), No. 19 Elijah Cleary and No. 31 Gage Cury (125) and Gregg Harvey (184).
