Columbia Wrestling sends three grapplers to the NCAA Wrestling National Championships getting started on Thursday, Mar. 17.
DETROIT — Three Columbia Wrestling grapplers, Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Champion No. 11 Matt Kazimir (141), No. 14 Joshua Ogunsanya (165) and No. 29 Joe Manchio (125) will take on the nation's best when they begin competition at the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships on Thursday, Mar. 17 at 12 p.m. EST at the Little Caesar Arena.
The tournament runs from Mar. 17 to Saturday, Mar. 19 and each day will be broken down by two sessions.
Kazimir, a two-time NCAA Nationals qualifier, will open his tournament against No. 22 Shannon Hanna (Campbell). He earned his No. 11 seed by running the table at the EIWA Championships to win the title, beating No. 14 CJ Composto (PENN) with a 6-4 decision. A win over Hanna, would move Kazimir into the second round where he could face either No. 6 Cole Matthews (PITT) or No. 27 Joseph Zargo (WIS).
Finishing second at the EIWAs, collecting a win over Cornell's No. 13 Julian Ramirez along the way, Ogunsanya comes into the week as the No. 14 seed. His first-round bout is against No. 19 Justin McCoy (UVA) and a win there will see him take on either No. 3 Alex Marinelli (IOWA) or No. 30 Evan Barczark (DREX).
Another two-time NCAA Nationals qualifier, Manchio finished fourth at the EIWAs and earned an at-large bid into the tournament. Manchio drew No. 4 Brandon Courtney (ASU) in the first round and a victory over the Arizona State grappler, would put him up against either No. 13 Drake Ayala (IOWA) or No. 29 Fabian Gutierrez (CHAT).
