Lions Lose At St. John's, 5-1

Columbia Baseball returns home for the weekend, with an Ivy League three-game series against Princeton.

QUEENS, N.Y. — Columbia Baseball (7-13, 1-2 IVY), in a midweek matchup at St. John's (10-15, 0-0 BIG EAST), fell 5-1 at Jack Kaiser Field in a Wednesday afternoon meeting of two New York programs.

Columbia got 5.2 innings of two run ball from the bullpen, keeping them in the game after an early lead from St. John's, but the Lions offense came on a bit too late in the game to comeback as Columbia ran out of outs late in the action.  Will Parkinson got the start, going a solid 2.0 IP, giving up no runs and only one hit to the Red Storm, but St. John's got to Phil Healy (0-1) in the third inning to take a lead they held for the remainder of the game.

Parkinson was solid in his start, battling through a pair of two out walks in the second inning to hold St. John's scoreless.  But in the third inning, Healy would give up three runs, all without giving up a hit, and it gave St. John's an early 3-0 lead.

Madrigal entered the game with one out, the bases loaded and one run already across, and despite giving up two runs, he got out of the inning without any more damage.  Madrigal was helped by a great running catch in right field from Hayden Schott, who followed a pop up into foul territory all the way to the wall, making a great catch before slamming into the right field fence.

Columbia's bullpen continued to do solid work as Madrigal was replaced by Billy Black, who along with Saajan May and Justin Tucker, each threw an inning of work with Black and Tucker giving up a run each.  The great late game pitching from the Lions kept them in the game, but Columbia's bats were silent for the first six innings.

In the seventh, the Lions finally got their first hit, when Schott sent a single up the middle.  In the eighth the Lions finally got on the board, scoring a run on a Skye Selinsky walk with the bases loaded, and at the time it put the score at 4-1 heading into the final innings.

St. John's would add a run in the bottom of the eighth and that would be enough to get the 5-1 win in Wednesday's midweek matchup.

GAME NOTES: Schott's hitting streak has been extended to eight games … Cole Hage has now reached base in 18 straight games … Black made his first relief appearance of the season …. In his last two outings, Madrigal has pitched 4.1 innings and only given up one earned run and two hits.

UP NEXT: Columbia returns to Robertson Field at Satow Stadium for a weekend Ivy League matchup with Princeton, starting with a Saturday, Apr. 2 doubleheader at 11:30 a.m., before wrapping up the weekend with a Sunday meeting set to get going at 12 p.m.
