TOWSON, Md. — The Columbia softball team got its offense going in a big way, tagging Coppin State for 10 runs on 15 hits to conclude the TU DeMarini Invite with a win, 10-3, Sunday afternoon on the campus of Towson.
Senior
Abby Stuart and first-year
Maddie Souza each had four-hit days to lead the charge. Souza was 4-for-4 at the plate with a run, an RBI and her first collegiate triple. Stuart went 4-for-5 in the cleanup spot, driving in the first two runs of the game to help Columbia (2-7) jump ahead in the top of the first.
Maria Pagane,
Lauren Osborne and
Jaden Hill added to the totals with two-hit games. Osbrone, Hill and
Dani Mandichak drove in two runs apiece.
"It's good to get a win but we still have a lot of work to do to get ready for our California trip next weekend," Columbia head coach
Jennifer Teague said. "We are going to enjoy getting back in the win column for a couple of days."
Jordan Hill was credited with her first collegiate win. The first-year came on in relief with a runner on base and the Lions leading 6-3 in the fourth inning. Hill put the first batter she faced on, but retired the next two to get out of the jam. The San Dimas, California native went the final 3 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out one to improve to 1-2.
Columbia recorded two separate three-run innings to open up the lead. They used a two-out rally in the third to score all three of their runs, courtesy of a
Jaden Hill RBI single,
Maddy Rifenberick RBI double and
Maddie Souza RBI triple.
In the sixth,
Bubba Gleaves and
Abby Stuart reached base and advanced into scoring position with nobody out to set the table.
Lauren Osborne followed with an RBI single back through the middle, plating Stuart from third and ending Coppin State starting pitcher Vanessa Carrizosa's day. Columbia tagged Carrizosa for nine runs, eight earned, on 13 hits. Run-scoring groundouts by
Dani Mandichak and
Jaden Hill increased the lead to 9-3.
The Lions added insult to injury in the seventh when Coppin State dropped a ball in center field to score Columbia's 10th and final run.
Columbia was scheduled to play Providence on Sunday prior to Coppin State. The game started at 10 a.m. but was suspended in the first inning and eventually canceled due to poor field conditions stemming from rainfall overnight.
The Lions will fly out to California next weekend for the UC Riverside Classic. They'll play five games out on the West Coast, beginning Saturday against Saint Mary's at 3 p.m. ET.
