NEW YORK — The Columbia softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Harvard by scores of 9-1 and 8-0 Saturday afternoon at the Baker Athletics Complex.
The two victories resulted in Harvard (11-13, 5-3 Ivy) leapfrogging Columbia (7-17, 4-4 Ivy) in the Ivy League standings. The Crimson posted three runs in both the first and second innings of game one and went on to take the victory in five innings. The two sides were scoreless after two innings in game two, but Harvard used a three-run homer off the bat of Morgan Melito to pull ahead in the third, followed by a pinch-hit grand slam from Kendall Jean in the sixth to put the game away.
Columbia struggled both offensively and defensively. The offense mustered just a run on five hits across the two games combined. Meanwhile, the defense committed five errors, which resulted in six unearned runs crossing the plate.
Offensively, first-year
Maddie Souza led the way by going 2-for-4.
Cami Neal,
Abby Stuart and
Raquel Reyes all recorded one hit apiece.
Maria Pagane drove in the lone run on an RBI groundout in the third inning of Saturday's opener.
Harvard's Madi Mays began the day with a three-run homer before the Lions ever came to bat. Three more runs came across in the second courtesy of a sac fly and run-scoring triple. A well-executed double steal put Harvard up 7-0 heading to the bottom of the third.
Starting pitcher
Jordan Hill didn't make it out of the second. The first-year was charged with six runs, all earned, on five hits and two walks, striking out two. Junior
Kaia McCaul came on to relieve Hill and went the rest of the way. Two more errors by the defense helped bring in three more runs, only one of which was earned against McCaul.
For Harvard, Anna Reed would get credit for a one-hitter in the shortened five-inning game. Reed struck out seven, allowing just the one unearned run when her defense committed two errors in the third.
Columbia's game two starter,
Raquel Reyes, worked around a leadoff double in the first inning and retired the next seven batters she faced. With two on and two out in the third, Allison Heffley singled home the game's first run. The next batter was Melito, who sent a three-run shot to left to open up the lead.
The Lions threatened for the first time in the fifth when
Cami Neal and
Maddie Souza led off the inning with back-to-back singles up the middle. Harvard's starting pitcher, Katie Arrambide, worked out of it by striking out Reyes and retiring Apollaro and Pagane to end the inning.
Two Columbia errors in the sixth ultimately resulted in four more runs crossing the plate. A fielding error on a sac bunt attempt and a throwing error on a grounder to Reyes loaded the bases with nobody out. After Reyes got Molly Dickerson to hit into an infield fly, Kendall Jean stepped up to bat as a pinch hitter and hammered a 1-0 pitch down the left field line, bringing everybody home and putting the run rule into effect.
Arrambide put two on in the bottom of the sixth but would eventually close the door. She held on for the complete game victory, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out two.
The Lions will try to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday, facing off against the Crimson at 12:30 p.m.
