Lightweights, Heavyweights to Compete at IRA Championship

Lightweights will compete in three events; Heavyweights to race in two events at three-day regatta beginning on Friday at Mercer Lake in Lake Windsor, N.J.
LAKE WINDSOR, N.J.—Following three full weeks of training, the Columbia Heavyweight and Lightweight Rowing teams will conclude their 2021-22 season at the 119th annual Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta this weekend at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The Lions will be racing at the event for the first time in two years since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event begins on Friday and runs through Sunday. Racing begins at 8 a.m. each day. More information including live results, schedule of events, ticketing, and historical results is posted at this link. Live video is available at this link. Columbia student-athletes will go through a practice session between 8:30 a.m.-noon on Thursday.
Overall, Columbia boats will compete in a total of five events during the weekend. Columbia's Heavyweight team will compete in two events: First Varsity Eight (24 teams competing) and Second Varsity eight races (23 teams competing). The Lightweights will race in three events: First Varsity Eight (9 teams competing), Second Varsity Eight (7 teams competing) and First Varsity Four (14 teams competing). Both teams have been ranked among nation's top-25 all season long as the Heavyweights enter at No. 17, while the Lightweights come in at No. 9.
Columbia's race schedule begins on Friday. Here is the order of events for the Lions' races:
8 a.m. – Second Varsity Lightweight 8 (Heat One)
8:20 a.m. – First Varsity Heavyweight 8 (Heat Two), top-2 advance to AB semifinals
9 a.m. – First Varsity Lightweight 8 (Heat Two), top-3 advance to final A, remainder to final B
9:20 a.m. – Second Varsity Heavyweight 8 (Heat 2), top-2 advanced to AB, remainder to reps
11:20 a.m. – Varsity Lightweight Four, all boats advance to Semi AB
All other semifinals will be contested after 1:50 p.m.
Mercer Lake is a man-made lake within Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. The lake came into being with the 1975 construction of a dam to control flooding on the Assunpink Creek in nearby Trenton. The site is the home of one of the United States Olympic Rowing team's training centers. It has played host to the 1988, 1992, 2004, and 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Rowing, U.S. Rowing National Team selection events, international regattas, and both collegiate and junior national championship regattas.
