Seven Columbia Athletics teams take to the road this weekend
NEW YORK — Seven Columbia Athletics teams will combine to compete in eight events this weekend, which include fall men's and women's tennis, fall women's golf, men's soccer, volleyball, football and two contests for field hockey.
Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview all of that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus. Be sure to access each team's website on gameday to keep up with all of the action as it happens.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The Columbia women's tennis team will compete in its second fall invitational this weekend, traveling to Philadelphia for the Cissie Leary Invitational. The three-day event will take place Friday, September 23, through Sunday, September 25, at the Hamlin Hecht Tennis Centers on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Head coach Ilene Weintraub's squad enters the weekend fresh of a successful fall opener at the Lion Quad. In the Columbia-hosted event, the Lions were victorious in 21 of 22 matches, completely sweeping the first day in straight sets. Junior Anna Zhang played from the Lions' top singles spot both days, recording two straight-set victories.
MEN'S TENNIS
The Columbia men's tennis team will continue its fall slate, traveling to Indiana to compete at the Bobby Bayliss Invitational. Hosted by Notre Dame, the event runs from Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25 at the Courtney Tennis Center. At last weekend's Knoxville Invitational, the Lions totaled 15 wins over three days. Junior Roko Horvat enjoyed great success in Tennessee, winning all three of his singles matches.
FIELD HOCKEY
Columbia field hockey (2-3) opens its Ivy League slate on Friday at No. 14 Harvard (3-2). The contest will prove to be a crucial test for Columbia's defense, especially reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week, Katie Wimmer. Last week, Wimmer produced a seven-save shutout to lead the Lions past Wagner 2-0 in Manhattan. Columbia will face its second ranked opponent of the weekend on Sunday, meeting No. 22 UMass in Amherst. The Lions will look to captain and leading goal-scorer, Maya Walker, to produce on both sides of the ball. Expectations remain high for rookie MK Myklebust, whose two-goal performance in Columbia's season-opener powered the Lions past LIU, 3-1.
WOMEN'S GOLF
The women's golf team competes in its second tournament of the fall season this weekend, taking part in the Princeton Invitational Saturday and Sunday. The 54-hole tournament begins with a shotgun start on Saturday at 9 a.m. The 12-team field will play 36 holes on Saturday, followed by the final 18 holes, again at 9 a.m., on Sunday. This year's field includes all six Ivy League programs -- Columbia, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Harvard and Penn -- as well as Albany, Fairleigh Dickinson, Georgetown, Holy Cross, St. John's and Seton Hall. Fans can follow the action with live tracking courtesy of Golfstat.
MEN'S SOCCER
The men's soccer team (1-4-1) will take a short trip to New Rochelle on Saturday for an 11 a.m. kickoff against Iona. The match will serve as Columbia's final tune-up before beginning the Ivy League portion of its schedule next Saturday against Brown. The Lions will be looking to snap a two-game goalless drought, most recently getting shutout at Drexel, 3-0, on Tuesday. Jack Muoio, Joao Lima and Jake Novoshelski have found the back of the net through Columbia's first five matches of the season.
FOOTBALL
Hardware will be on the line for the football program (1-0) as it heads to Washington, D.C. Saturday to face Georgetown for the Lou Little Cup. The Lions are riding high after coasting to a 38-3 victory over Marist last weekend, highlighted by strong performances by Joey Giorgi (16 rushes, 103 yards, 1 TD) and Alex Felkins, who set a program-record by making a 53-yard field goal. Columbia topped the Hoyas, 35-24, last season at home and has won three of the last four head-to-head meetings.
VOLLEYBALL
Columbia volleyball (3-6) travels to Ithaca for its Ivy League opener on Saturday afternoon, going up against Cornell at 2 p.m. This weekend's match is the 58th overall meeting between the Lions and the Big Red. The teams split the season series in 2021, both protecting home court. Logan Harlock had 15 kills in the first meeting. Vanessa Pan recorded 24 digs in the second match. The Lions are coming off a weekend at the Red Storm Invitational where they faced three teams with a combined record of 30-9. On day one, Columbia took St. John's to five sets and then battled Middle Tennessee for four sets. Saj McBurrows tallied a career-high in kills (14) against the Red Storm.
