MALIBU, Calif. – Clarine Lerby and
Sophia Wang posted wins in their singles matches, but that wasn't enough as Columbia fell to Memphis, 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in Malibu.
The Lions will wrap up the ITA Kickoff Weekend in a consolation match on Sunday morning in the regional hosted by Pepperdine.
The duo of Wang and
Anna Zhang won Columbia's only doubles match of the day at the No. 1 spot. Wang and Zhang defeated Emily Meyer and Aran Teixido Garcia, 6-2.
Fatima Keita and
Rachele Rimondini lost to Camila Soares and Monique Woog, 6-3 at the No. 2 doubles.
Shivani Amineni and Michelle Wu dropped the No. 3 doubles match to Car Farres Carreter and Miriam Grosmann, 6-3.
Trailing after the completion of doubles play, the Lions won matches to start singles action to jump out to a 2-1 lead. Lerby defeated Grosmann in the No. 6 singles spot, 6-4, 6-1. Wang followed that up with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot over Dolavee Tumthong.
Memphis would claim the next three matches to clinch the 4-2 victory over the Lions. Teixido Garcia took a three-set 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Zhang at the No. 1 singles to start the Tiger rally. Woog then defeated Amineni in three sets 6-0, 6-7(2-7), 6-4 at the No. 3 singles to reclaim the lead. Memphis sealed the team win with Meyer's 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win over Rimondini at the No. 4 spot.
