HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth scored 20 unanswered points to defeat the Columbia football team, 20-9, Saturday afternoon. The Lions had opportunities to pull closer in the fourth quarter, but two drives stalled in the red zone as they fall to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in Ivy League play.
Senior quarterback Joe Green earned his first start since last October against Penn and completed 25-of-41 passes for 239 yards and a rushing touchdown. Malcolm Terry II rushed for a career-high 62 yards on 17 carries.
"The biggest thing was we didn't take advantage of some of the opportunities we had to come away with points," interim head coach Mark Fabish said. "We've had to face quite a bit of adversity, and when I spoke to the team last night, I said any time you get knocked down you've got to get back up. For three and a half quarters, there was a lot of friction and we kept coming back so hopefully in the end, we're stronger as a result. Obviously, we wanted to get the win and and my heart breaks for our guys, but we're resilient and we'll continue to play hard."
Columbia came out firing on all cylinders, driving 75 yards in over five minutes to take an early 7-0 lead. Green connected with tight end Jack Larsen for the big play of the possession to set up a five-yard rushing score for Green on a quarterback keeper with 9:53 remaining in the first quarter.
After a pair of defensive stops, a William Hughes punt pinned the Big Green (3-3, 2-1) on their 11. On the first snap of the possession, a bad snap sailed into the end zone and was kicked out of play by the Dartmouth quarterback for a safety to extend the cushion to 9-0. However, the Big Green used a big special teams play to get back into the game.
A Hughes punt was blocked and recovered in the endzone by a Dartmouth player to get the Big Green on the board. Dartmouth then used a long 7:17 drive that spanned from the end of the first quarter into the second to take the lead after Tevita Moimoi scored from four yards out with 10:03 before the half.
Dartmouth took advantage of a short field after an interception on a tipped ball and made it 17-9 after Owen Zalc drove home a 54-yard field goal in the rain with 2:19 left in the second quarter.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Big Green started the fourth within Zalc's range, and his 47-yard attempt was good to make it a two-possession game.
Columbia had a golden opportunity to pull closer after JJ Jenkins made a 40-yard grab in traffic to put the Lions on the Dartmouth 1. However, a bad snap on second down stalled the drive and Columbia came up empty after a dropped pass in the endzone on fourth down.
The defense came up with another key stop and Columbia drove all the way to the Big Green 16, but Green was sacked on third down to force a long field goal try that was missed and Dartmouth ran out the clock.
Defensively, Anthony Roussos led the way with 12 tackles, eight solo and one for a loss. The Lions held Dartmouth to 61 passing yards, which was a season-best and the lowest total for the Big Green this year.
The Lions will remain on the road to take on Yale in New Haven, Connecticut, next Saturday, October 28. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
