PHILADELPHIA – The Columbia men's tennis team had a great showing at the ITA Regional Championships in Philadelphia over the weekend as
Ishaan Ravichander and
Henry Ruger advanced to the ITA Super Regionals in singles and the duos of Ravichander and Ruger and
Jayden Templeman and
Sachin Palta advanced in doubles.
The ITA Super Regional Championships will be hosted by Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey starting Friday, October 20.
Columbia two doubles teams punched their tickets to the super regionals on Sunday. Ravichander and Ruger had to wait until Monday to secure their spot in the singles portion of the super regionals.
Both doubles teams kicked off the round of 64 draw with a bye and only had to win three matches to advance. The duo of Ruger and Ravichander got started with an 8-4 win over Jenkins and Skorjanc from NJIT on Friday. The duo then downed LIU's Osap and Harder, 8-3 to advance to the round of 16. Looking for one of four bids to advance to the super regionals, Ruger and Ravichander posted an 8-5 win against Ivy Leauge foes Paquette and Sharma from Cornell.
Palta and Templeman started the doubles tournament with a commanding 8-0 win over Buffalo's Macnamara and Malkin on Friday. The duo then battled to take an 8-6 win against Binghamton's Osap and Harder to stay in contention for one of the four super regional bids. Palta and Templeman closed out the weekend with an 8-4 win over Lehigh's Morash and Bezianis to secure a spot in the ITA Super Regionals.
Ravichander and Ruger received byes in the first round of singles Friday, so both got started with singles action on Saturday. Ravichander opened the weekend with a 7-6(4), 6-2 win over FDU's Arjun Sriram, while Ruger took a 6-4, 6-2 win against Monmouth's Christof Zeiler. On Sunday, Ravichander earned a dominating 6-0, 6-2 win over Cornell's Sharma. Ruger battled to advance with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(2) against Princeton's Aleksandar Mitric. Looking to advance to the super regionals, Ravichander and Ruger cruised in their matches Monday to earn a spot in the super regionals. Ravichander posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over LIU's Philip Hilble, while Ruger took a 6-1, 6-3 win against Wagner's David Krasner.
