NEW YORK — The Columbia fencing teams combined to go 6-0 at the Columbia Invitational Saturday in the Blue Gym of the Dodge Fitness Center. The Lions coasted in all three rounds as the men stayed perfect at 11-0 and the women improved to 11-1 on the year.
In round one, the women's foil trio of
Rachael Kim,
Vivian Zheng and
Christelle Ko took care of business in a 22-5 win over Stevens. The men took down the Ducks, 21-6 thanks to an 8-1 mark from Samarth Kumbla,
Ethan Xiao and
Michael Hilmer.
The women earned a complete sweep of NJIT, 27-0, in the second round. Men's foil shined again, going 9-0, with Kumbla joined by
Zachary Binder and
Bogdan Hamilton against the highlanders in a 21-6 triumph.
Johns Hopkins proved to be the toughest opponent of the day, but weapon wins in foil and sabre for both the men and women were the difference to close the competition unblemished.
Columbia is back in action on January 14 at the Penn State Invitational where the Lions will take on the host Nittany Lions, Haverford (men only), Temple (women only), Duke, Penn and North Carolina.
